Hi-

I'm looking for some nice pointy bullets to use in my 45-70 single shot. I know that Barnes makes one and Lee now has a mold out that will drop a 500 gr cast bullet. Are there any other sources for spitzers in .458 diameter? I'd like to stay right around 400 gr if possible, to maximize both impact and range.

I've had real good luck with the 405 gr cast flat points I normally shoot, but would like to get a better ballistic coeff for longer range shots. thanks, maxman

Speer hasa 500 grain TBBC, Nosler has a 300 grain, Barnes has a 400 grain and 300 grain in their "Original" line and 250 to 500 in their "X" line.

Hawk Bullets also has .458" spitzers with .025" jackets in 350 and 400 grain and .035" jackets in 300, 350, 400 and 450 grains. If the .035" jacketed bullets are too stout then the .025" jacketed one should work just fine. A properly throated Ruger #1 in 45-70 will push a 400 grain bullet 2200 fps and a 350 grain bullet 2400 fps. So, actually for elk and moose, with a strong bolt or single shot gun and a high mounted scope the 45-70 IS a 300 yard proposition. The key with the newer Rugers is to ream out the throat a little bit so you can seat to around a 2.75" COAL.

Keep in mind that most spitzer bullets are designed for velocities higher than you will achieve in the 45-70, hence, may not open up as you may prefer. Depending on what you're shooting at, you may consider .458" "Pre-expanded".

I can't see a reason to worry about a spitzer in a .45-70. It's forte is not long range, I'd use the proper bullet for a .45-70 and use the rifle as a short-range thumper.
