All,

I am getting set up to load 6mm Remington
cartridges, for a brand new barrel, that will
get put on a Savage 16. I have never loaded
6mm Remington, so I am looking for some
suggestions for a starting point, for powder
choices. From my data books, it looks like
IMR4831, or IMR4350, or RL-19, would be
possibly good powders to start with.
Does anyone have some other suggestions,
for powders, that yield accurate loads,
in the 6mm Remington. A little background
info. I am starting with 65 grain bullets(VMax,
and Berger Match), since this gun is suppose to
fit in between my .223 class cartridges, shooting
50-55 gr. bullets, and my .25-06 Rem, shooting
75-85 gr. bullets. The 6mm is for bang flop
coyote shooting, and paper punching.

Thanks in advance for any info you may
provide.

for the light bullets I'd try Varget.

RL-15 and H-4895 also are good choices

I have Varget. I load .223 Rem. with it, and I
have some load development stuff using it,
for my .22-250 Rem., that I haven't fired yet.
I did not see any Varget data, in the data books
I normally use(Hornady, Barnes, Speer, and
Nosler). I have the Hogdgon data book, but for
some reason I rarely look at it. Silly Me.

Thanks for the reminder to check the Hogdgon
Book. I will give Varget a try. I think the powder
measure is loaded with it as I type this.

For 65's:
H-414 From 46.5 grains to 49.5 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

However, I found the following to be best in my 6mm's:

5-shots, 200-yards
Bullet: Sierra 85 Grain HPBT
Powder: 43.2 grains of IMR-4350
Primer: Remington 9-1/2
Case: Remington
Firearm: Ruger 77R
Optics: Leupold 4x12AO
Velocity: 3128 FPS @ 15' from muzzle

I am getting ready to work-up another load using the same bullet, case and primer, but using H-4831SC from 43.2 to 51.0 grains. But I have to wait for the weather.

I've had excellent results with H4895, Varget, RE15 and H4350 with 75 Sierra and Hornady HPs. RE19 with 87 Hornady HPs is a good shooter at 47.5grs. 45grs. IMR4350 and the same bullet Steve used in that target produced consistant 3/4moa out to 200yds. Jay

My loading notes show that an old 721 in .244 liked slow powders like surplus 4831, even with bullets as light as the Hornady 65 gr V-Max. I would tend toward the 4831's and 7828 end of the spectrum, especially with bullets from 80 grains up.

I tested 15 different powders with my 6mm Rem, and a 75 grain HP bullet.. but this held true when tried with 65 grain V Maxes, 60 grain HP Sierras.. and 55 grain Ballistic Tips.....

H 414.... MY groups were all one holers.. in fact I couldn't believe it so much, I went home and loaded up 25 more and then "shot around the horn" on a target, just to make sure, one wasn't hitting the paper and lord knows the others were flying....

But it proved to be consistent....

49.5 grains with H 414 and 65 grain V Maxes...

47.5 grains with 75 grain HP Hornadys, or Sierras 75 HP, or Speers.....MV 3650 to 3725 fps with the 75s out of a 24 inched PacNor Barrel on a Remington Long Action...75 grainers seated to magazine length on the Remington....

I also have a 31 inch BULL barrel, in 6mm Rem on a Mauser Action, with a Timney Trigger... It is waiting for a new laminate stock, with a 3.5 inch forearm from Richards... I ordered a stock in a blue and gray laminate... but it won't be here until April....

RL 19 is my powder for 95 to 115 grain bullets...

Welcome to the 6mm Rem Club..

cheers

With your 65 Gr. bullet choice I'd try two powders Varget and H414. Your gun will make the choice for you. My 6MM shoots 70 Gr. Blitzking with Varget the best but H414 is close.
