Now that bullets have gotten so high I need to pull some bullets from the various old reloads I have laying around that I don't own rifles for anymore. I have one of the old RCBS slammers and will not use the noisy beast for anything ever anymore.

I've got a midway brand and one from Barrys. Simple hammers, work fine.

I want to try one of the collet type bullet pullers, mostly for 30 caliber and up bullets.

I use the RCBS collet bullet puller die. Works great and you simply buy the collets you need, as you need them. There are other collet pullers out there of similar design that I understand work very well also.

If you start the bullet pulling process by first seating the bullet about 1/8" deeper by using the seating die (especially for military and other crimped rounds) you'll find bullet pulling much easier.

I use a farmers "one-size-fits-all" wire pincers for all my bullet pulling needs and won't ever go back to a collet type puller.

The slight mark on the bullet don't mean squat!

Some folks get way way too anal about reloading!

I own a Forster brand collet bullet puller. The only reason I bought this brand over the others is because it was the cheapest at the time.

I pulled 50 Nosler BTs from 7mm Mag cases a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t see one mark on any of them (from the collet anyway).

I would think that the other brands of collet pullers would work just as well.

Interesting Vapodog, you need to post a picture of your bullet puller. I think I know what you’re talking about but I could be wrong.

Make sure you look at the honady collet puller before you buy. It is the best I have seen. I have the RCBS as well however I don't like that the die gets tighter when you use it. The hornady is faster with it's cam lever that tightens the collet on the bullet.

They're also known as end-cutters. Can be used with something to pad the bullet.

I'm surprised that more haven't touted the Hornady tool. It's the nicest of the collet-type.

I would rate them for pulling bullet:
1) Hornady
2) Forster
3) RCBS

Honorable mention to the impact type, for pulling or pulling out a little ways, one uncrimped bullet.

I didn’t tout it because I haven’t used it. As far as I know it’s as good or better then what I own.

I have a RCBS I'm sure any collet puller is 10 times better then that hammer.

I know with the RCBS I can use one collet for several calibers 6.5 works for 257 and 243, 270 works for 7mm, 8mm will do 308.

The sinclare plier type looks good but you have to buy two to cover all the range of size.

Stick the cartridge in the shell holder of your press and move it up so the bullet just protrudes above the top of the press.....clamp onthe bullet with the pincers lightly and pull the case with the press handle.....out she comes!

Yes....it leaves a mark.....and it's never bothered me ever!

I referenced your post to remark about the pliers. My comment regarding the Hornady tool was intended as non-specific.

I have both the RCBS & the Hornady or in my case Pacific collet type pullers, I like the Hornady to use best & haven't even upgraded to the toggle type handle, but one thing I do find is the a little grease between the body & the collet improves both of them, it only takes a smear.

I gave my hammer away many moons ago and bought a Hornady. Not an item that is used much, but when you do the collet type is easy and effective to use.

That’s what I thought you were talking about. I have a couple of them in the shop.

+1 the Hornady is all I ever use now, have had all the others mentioned, including pliars and side cutters and bulldog dykes.

Like Vapo said, pliers or some good catfish skinners are hard to beat with no die in the press and the appropriate shell holder.

Vapo,

Have you tried putting tire tube rubber or something on yours to keep from damaging the bullets?

Thanks,

Reloader
