It may sound obvious, but keep your ammuntion types seperated! I went to the range today and got a surprise just before we all left. One of my friends chambered one of my .308 Winchester handloads into his Nagant and fired it. Luckily the case held together as it expanded to fit the chamber and the only other effects were a half-way pushed out primer and slightly stuck case. Still scared us though. The round was chambered because both ammo boxes were sitting side-by-side with the same style tips. Anybody ever have something like this happen to them? | ||

My son fired some 270Win through my 30/06 one time but, of course, there were no catastrophic results. I have seen pictures and read testimonies from others who have blown rifles up using incorrect ammo. Dennis Life member NRA | |||

Thanks for the reminder KennethI!!!! I damn near got to squeeze of a 7mmMag in my 338 one day and caught myself just before closing the bolt. Since that day, I use the MTM colored boxes and when I sit down with a firearm, I move the other ammo to the far side of the bench. Anyone recognize this one? http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/dustoffer/Picture020.jpg My local 'smith says it is the most common ammo-swap error. It is a .270 Win fired in a 7mm Rem Mag rifle. The rifle was a Ruger M77 Mk II. No damage to the shooter (other than a change of underwear needed) and minimal damage to the rifle. Bottom metal was trashed, but no damage to bolt, barrel, or action. Rifle has been checked out, and is now in my shop for an accuracy load workup. I once fired 7X57 in a 8X57 rifle. It sounded a little funny and hit the target about 3 inches low at 100 yards. I figured it was a light (short) load. I did it 2 more times before I read the head stamp and figured out what I was doing wrong. Same story, both ammo boxs looked the same and where side by side on the shooting bench  DRSS member Constant change is here to stay. | |||

I've seen 308's fired in Garands. And just a couple weeks ago I know of a Springfield that had been rebarreled to 300 Win Mag (not chamber stamped and bought at auction) that fired a standard 30-06 round. Luckily no damage or harm done to rifles or shooters in either case. | |||

I've seen two and experienced one. A 308 put through a 270. Locked it up tighter than a drum but the 700 held. A 270 Win. through a 7 Rem mag. This produced a splattered face and the bottom metal was bent but again the 700 held. He blamed the factory ammo untio I asked to see the case, which he had conveniently lost. Although he did kill a deer in the process. I was shooting my 22 WRM with absolutely disaterous 'patterns' (not group) until I found that I had brought 17 HMR ammo. | |||
