I'm looking for a good safe load for an old Remington rolling block that I picked up awhile back. It's in 7x57 cal which is a common cal but the books don't say anything about the old guns like this one. I would like to use it for deer hunting if there is a safe load around for it. Any help would be appreciated.

Have it checked for headspace. Some old military 7X57mm rolling blocks have a greater head-to-shoulder measurement in their chambers than modern 7X57mm's do! If so, you'll have to expand the necks up to, like, .308" then reneck them to produce a "secondary headspacing shoulder" on the cases so they don't drop too far into the chamber before firing, in order to be safe! I have fired factory 7X57mm Remington 175-grain ammo in the old rolling bloacks, and it worked! I believe any reloading manual starting load with a 140, 160, or 175-grain bullet would work OK as a deer/elk/moose load, but would be safer if you used a slow powder like IMR 4350, since these powders will give adequate MV with lower pressures than the medium or fast burning powders do.

You might try the 154gr Hornady round nose with 49 gr. of aa 3100 compressed.Should be close to 2400 ft./sec. in your rifle. That's plenty for deer. As was stated the the slower powder will hold the pressure down. The new Lee manual has a lot of info. roger
