In my experience other than maybe a bad scope, the most likely cause of your group size is the stock. If it's one of the old "rubber" stocks good luck. They shoot a little better if bedded but it's hard to get bedding to properly stick to the old style stock. I replaced mine and it will shoot well under 2" groups.....at 300yds. I've had no experiance with the new style stock, I think they are too ugly and misshaped to mess with..........DJ

My experience echos Jimmy's. Model 70 Laminate, pillar bedded and trigger job. 1/2" groups with 65.0 IMR4350 Fed 210 primers and 180 grains Barnes TSX's @2970fps

Have you had someone else shoot it? Maybe a bad scope? How are you off the bench with other similarly recoiling rifles?

cobia79, I have a newer 70 CRF in the laminated wood stock and after doing some fitting and a full bedding job the gun will shoot 1/2" groups all day long if I can do my part with the factory Winchester 180's. I am using weaver type 2 pcs bases and 30mm MGW rings with a 4.5-14 LR Leupold.
I put 40 rounds through it last week and was very happy with the results coming from factory ammo.

Need help, What is an all round good game round for this rifle? I bought the rifle brand new and I've put about a 100 rounds of winchester ammo thru it and the grouping just is not that good. Been shooting mainly 180 gr thru it. I bought sierre 180 gr and H4831sc and using various loads. Just can't seem to get the groups under 2in. Any one with suggestions? Thanks....

What with 100 rounds of factory not shooting well it may be something else. Just for the fun of it however what are the loads of H 4831 SC that you tried with the 180 Sierra's?

Check that everything is tight.

I recently bought a 300 WSM (Sako Model 75) and am having good luck with two particular loads. Both use Win760 powder (I had tried without success: Reloader 22 and IMR-7831).

Here are the best loads thus far:
Speer 180gr Grand Slam bullets with 65 gr of Win-760 producing a velocity of 2,866 ft/s. Note, this velocity is about 75 ft/s below what Speer published in its table for this max load. Group was 0.623" (100 yds).

The second was a Hornady 180gr Interlock BTSP with 66 gr of Win-760 producing an average velocity of 2,886 ft/s which is within 60 ft/s of what Hornady published in its tables. Best group was 0.537" (100 yds).

Both of the above COLs were as published in the respective manuals. I am now doing some fine tunning of powder charge and COL in hopes of improving a bit yet.

Good luck, I really like this round so far.

Cobia

I also have a model 70 (FWT) in 300wsm that I have had a couple of years now. Factory powerpoint (180 grain) ammo shot about 1.5". Have since found two handloads that will do 1/2 -3/4" regularly. My favorite bullets are sierra 165 HPBT gameking and 180 grain SPBT gameking. With the 165s I shoot varget, with the 180s H4350. I am using CCI magnum primers. I bet you can get it shooting with a little tinkering.

My 300WSM M70 Classic Stainless shoots factory 180 gr Fail safes to 1.5", 180 Ballistic Silvertips to 1.25", and handloads of the following to .5-.75" consistantly:

165 Nosler BT, 55Gr Varget
165 NBT, 54Gr H4895
168 Matchking, 55Gr Varget
180 NBT, 64 Gr H4350

I beat my head against H4831SC for over 20 combinations and never matched factory ammo accuracy in 180 Gr bullets, much less approached my results with 165's. First 3 powder weights I tried with H4350 (62, 63, 64) went .887", .784", and .534".

My rifle REALLY likes bullets seated long, right at or touching the rifling, though. Adjust powder charge accordingly if you try it.....

YMMV! Have fun!

Savage,
Yep thats what i thought too. I thought I just could'nt shoot worth a hill a beans. Then upon inspection of the scope after the first box of rounds We found it shifting in the mounts. Fixed that problem. Then come to find out the screws in the reviever worked lose got that issue taken care of. That was 2 boxes of win. ballistic tips exspensive trial and erroe but love to shoot as much as fish. Well bought a couple more boxes after everything checked out again and went for it. The win ballistic tips shoot ok. I mean I'am in the kill zone just not as good as everyone talks about, not reall happy with it .3 or 4 will be grouped ok 2" groups or so and then 1 or 2 will be in no mans land. So today shot what I loaded, 180gr sierra sp load with IMR 4831 and H 4831sc from 62gr up to 69.5 gr . Much better grouping any where from 1.2" - 2". I've heard of people shooting 1/4" groups with the factory ammo 150 gr.But I really dont know how tru that is. Just need to keep experimenting an see what this gun likes. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I shoot the following today.
IMR 4831
63.0 at 1.5" , 64.7 at 1.6", 65.6 at no mans land, 66.5 at 1.9" H4831SC 67.5 at 1.7" and 65.5 at 3.1" didnt get to shoot last to loads range closed down. I think Iam gonna give them ballistic tips another shoot with 180's and 150's. What do you think?

If you are going to hunt with this rifle, and game larger that coyote is on the menu, stick with the 180 grain bullets (in Ballistic Tip or SST). I have tried 150 and 165 grainers, and they overexpand at 150+ yards and in. For paper punching, they are close to Matchkings, no problems there.

My recomendation, try different powders. I tried 4 different bullets in 180 grain with 4831, none showed dramatic improvement. When I went to 4350, dramatic improvement.

Well mines an early Browning, but I've been quite sucessfull at getting it to shoot.

The slowest powder tried was IMR 7828 with dismal results. WW760 seems to run into pressure before desired velocity is reached, at least with 165 and 180's. Best results have been with AA XMR 4350, Reloader 19 and H 4831 SC.

Bullets used were Hornady SST, and recently Hornady interbonds in 165 grain. H4831 SC showed promise as I got to top published data acording to Hornady. Groups tightened to just under an inch. Checking case pressure ring expansion compared to factory 165 bal silv tips, the top load was mild. I went up and over in .5 grain increments to 2.0 over max. At that point I got a .468 group for 3 shots at 100 yds. No pressure signs either. Subsequent loading of the same recipe on a different day resulted in .567 group.

I quit using winchester brass after having to dump 2 cases from a brand new bag, cracked necks! I got some Norma brass, MUCH BETTER! I also do not use magnum primers. Just standard winchester LR. You're not igniting a lot of powder and it's a shorter powder column.

I loaded some 190 matchkings with R-19 for a 600 yd fun shoot. 66.0 gr gave me honest half inch 100 yd groups. But that's what I expect from match kings.
