...I have yet to find a cat, but I found a bullet, and that's a start....

Why yes, I'd say that is a fine start.

If it was me and the cat(kitty or larger) was up a tree, then it would be pistol or revolver time. Any of the current pistol/revolver ammo carried by the policeman who shot the cat would have worked just fine - if he could have hit it. I'd prefer a good old 158gr SP, HP or XTP in a 357Mag or a 200gr Lead Wad Cutter in the always excellent 45ACP for kit.. cat blasting.

If the distance required using a 223Rem, then I'd probably(hesitant because of ALL the excellent Bullet choices available) go with a 55gr Plated Hollow Point(PLHP) Remington bullet atop either WW-748(great velocity and right nice accuracy) or Benchmark(unequalled accuracy and right nice velocity).

Very inexpensive bullets which have to be used to be appreciated for their full potential and near Matcg Grade accuracy. The Lead core is pre-formed and then the jacket is plated on. There is no chance at all of jacket separation - can't happen.

And of course, I'd place any of the above Bullets in the front 1/3 of the cat and stand back so it doesn't fall onto me as it drops stone dead.

Now if we could just get Clark to line up a cat for us, we would all be ready!

The Video is still on the internet I'm sure, but the cat only went to the yard next door (about 20 yards). I'm not the hunter most on this board are, but the choice for LE is going to be a Glock, the AR-15, or the shotgun. I'd think the shotgun would be best. 12 soft lead .38" balls moving 1500fps would beat the .223 for that application, IMHO

The big tom was taken by Ron Hisler from Duval, WA, with one shot from a .30-06 shooting Barnes X bullets. His partner, Jim Hackewitz used a varmint call to bring in the big cat taken within 6 miles of bellevue, WA. bellevue is a major suburb of Seattle. Washington voters passed a bill banning the hunting of cougars with dogs a few years back. Good idea?

UPDATE: Unofficial score 15-12/16, which would be in a 6-way tie for #7 all-time. Included in this list is a 15-12/16 tom taken by the only American President in the records book Boone and Crockett Club Founder, Theodore Roosevelt, which when entered was the World's Record at that time. Roosevelt took his cougar near Meeker, CO, in 1901.

4/30/03 UPDATE: The official entry score for this cougar is 15-7/16.

The freeway in Bellevue is stop-go with 4 lanes in each direction [don't ask why I know]. All Republican candidates for Governor had platforms including widening I405 through Bellevue.

The city has lots of real high rise buildings.

Hey Clark, Thanks for the info and flick. That is quite a Cat. I'm real sure I've never seen one that size sneaking around in the wild.

As I was sitting here looking at it, it seems the "Tree Huggers" have implemented a law(banning Dog Hunting) which is allowing you all to grow some WHOPPER TROPHY size Cats. I like Dog Hunting myself, but that seems to be a rather nice benefit if you can't run the Dogs.

It would even take a fairly good tree to have limbs large enough to hold that Cat! Which brings up the question, why would a Cat that size tree if Dogs weren't chasing it? I'd guess it wouldn't bother.

Thanks again.

Winchester 64 grain Supreme Power Point Plus. When my niece was nine she wanted to shoot deer with me when I visited over the holidays. We went to the local X-mart, bought a .223 and a box of the Winchester ammo. It does a pretty good job. Nice hole, good expansion, dead deer.
Next time you have a pooty tat cornered in a tree give some thought to just popping it with your trusty Glock. When we go cat hunting around here we usually shoot them off a cliff, or out of a tree with a hard cast bullet out of a Ruger in 45 Colt.
40 Smith & Wesson; if it's good enough for a gang-banger, it's good enough for Sylvester.

PS I hope somebody saved the meat. Mountain Lion tastes pretty good.

Lions arn't hard to kill. I 've called in 3 and kill two over the years. First took 1 shot from a 270. Second took 1 shot also in the chest from my 222 Sako (45gr. Sierra SP) at 35yds. I would not hesitate to use a 22CF again.

Dat's a big pooty tat. Wouldn't it have been great if you just darted it, then let it wake up in the ladies room at Bell-Square mall?

I drive through Bellevue to get to do some work in Redmond.
Redmond is so built up it is crowding out residences.
Right where I park, there a great big bear pie.

I think the animals are making a TET offensive.

After seeing what a 223 does to a coyote, or lack of, i would lean towards something abit bigger. A 25.06 or 6mm sounds better to me than a 223. The last thing i would want is a pissed off kitty in my lap. Good luck!
