Does anyone out there know if the 30-30 headspaces on the rim or the sholder???

It can headspace on either, and would depend on the dimensions of the particular brass versus the dimensions of your particular chamber as to which is actually doing the work. Most .30-30 chambers are so generous that the rim usually is the controlling feature when firing factory ammunition.

When shooting a .30-30 in a "non-stretchy" action such as TC Contender or Savage 340, as with any bottlenecked cartridge it can be reloaded to headspace much more tightly on the shoulder and disregard the rim (much like a belted magnum.)

Lots of good advice here Think I will go with a tight fit on the sholder.
