I have several hundred Mt Baldies 270 grain cast bullets with gas checks, that a friend gave me. I would like to have a few load suggestions. I am looking to shoot them about 1700 to 1800 FPS unless you guys think that is too fast. Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Thanks

Ron

Ron: I don't load the 9.3X74R, but I do shoot lead bullets in rifles a lot, and in the 375 H&H in particular. The velocities you listed, would require a heat treated bullet in order not to lead the bore, in my experience. Most non heat treated bullets need to be kept below 1600fps. You can use Unique Powder, as an example. Look in one of the Lyman Reloading Manuals, and you'll be able to come up with a load, in some cartridge, that will appoximate the capacity and weight you wish to shoot in yours. Use your chronograph, and you'll be in business.

Good Luck

I have not checked velocities, but I've been shooting 260 grain plain base cast bullets from wheel weights pushed with Trail Boss. I started at 17 grains, after talking with the folks at IMR and worked up to an accurate load. The sights on my drilling are not the easiest to see, but with my old eyes and wobbly arms, I'm averaging 2 1/2 inch groups offhand at fifty yards. That's as good as I get with factory loads. These are quite pleasant to shoot in a light and older rifle. I would think my velocities are probably well below what you are looking for.

Thanks for the replies guys, I wondered if 1700 to 1800 would be to fast. I have wanted to try Trailboss and did not know where to start at. I also emailed Accurate powder today, looking for a load using 5744. Will post the info when they answer it. Again many thanks.
