AA-8700. It is a little slower than H-870, but it should do the job.

I ran into the same problem you did, since H-870 is my favorite powder for several loadings, but fortunately I still have around 7-1/2 pounds of it left.

AA-8700 From 60.3 grains to 76.6 grains
Winchester WLR Primer

If you can find some H-450 someplace, which may be more difficult than H-870:

H-450 From 64.1 grains to 68.4 grains
Winchester WLR Primer

Griff-

There is a military surplus powder available here in the states called WC-872. From what I have been told, it is the closest surrogate to H-870. The military uses it for 20mm cannon ammo.

That's what I am planning on using in my .264 Winnie when it is ready.

Good luck!!

thanks all,
one of the problems we have here in o'l blighty is the selection of powders.
our most common are:
Hodgdon
reloader series
vithavouri

So you see the problem, and should there be any others available, they have to be in close proximity because of the legislation on carriage!!

sussed it!!

went out this morning with the rel 19 started at 53gns and worked upto 57gns in .5gn increments.oal was 3.3"
53gns gave 2899fps and 57gns gave 3107fps
all had reasonable accuracy.
the 68gns load of H1000 gave 3329fps on the chrono which was way over the top, there was signs of pressure, I thought that the sticky extraction was due to neck sizing, I was well under the max which is 71gns, so didn't suspect anything. thank god for the chrono!

Surplus WC 872 is an excellent powder for the .264 Win, but it is considerably slower (at least in the 8-pound lot I have) than H870. In fact, in 40+ years of working with the .264 I have found nothing better than WC 872.

I would think that WC 872 would be very hard to come by in Europe. With your 129 grain bullets, I would try RL-25 (or its Norma counterpart). There are also a couple of Finish VV powders made for the .50 MG that might work well.

Then I think a ferry trip, a tour Belgium brewerires, and a visit to a gun shop is in order.

I tried H-1000 in my FN 264,it spiked at the starting load, popping a primer.Hodgons data has H-1000 well under max. pressure, that's a clue it might be spikey at the edge.

I tried RL-25,with each shot in the group, the velocity increaced fair bit,not heat insisistive

The FN 264 now has a Douglas barrel.

stonecreek,
one of the reason I wanted a ball powder was, and I don't know if it was you that mentioned it was the apparent life of the barrel is extended with a ball rather than extruded.
Any way panic over, I've put the stihl saw away!!
gun shooting reasonable!

think the h1000 will make a large genie in the garden! won't be tempted again. the Rel 19 seems ok but is barely 50% case capacity.
will try Rel 22 and 25 see how we go on, what kind of case capacity are you getting with 25.

The first load I tried with my .264WM was 60 grains of IMR7828 and Speer 140 grainers. Shot consitent 1/2" groups so I haven't tried anything else. Velocity is 3010 fps. S40

Griff,my rifle doesn't have a standard 264 WinMag chamber, the throat is longer, just to ease the spikeyness .I can add at lest two or three grains more of coal,so don't use my numbers. 65 grains of R-25 gave me 3150,where as 73 grains of Ramshot Magnum gave the same velocity. With a 24" barrel,a safe max, should be 3150.(with that 22" FN barrel it was only 2900,and it walked)

I tried VihtVouri N-560,I use it in my 308Norma ,338WM and 30-06.It's about the same burn rate as R-22.It topped out at 2950,even adding powder didn't increase velocity.I heard that V V might be coming out with a N-570.They list N-560 with the 264 but not N-170.They also use the much lower CIP pressures, than the SAAMI.
