I just picked up an NEF in 30-30, not that I need another 30 cal. but I was wondering how much I could extend the range of the venerable 30 WCF with spitzer bullets with a boat tail, say the hornaday interbond or nosler ballistic tip and healthy dose of powder. what kind of velocities can you get from a 22" barrel?? can you make it a reliable combo to 300yards??

I'm inclined to believe the 30-30 is just that, a darn good 200 yard gun that I have killed a lot of deer with at 300 yards, soooo who knows..You will get some advantage with a spitzer but I would not expect any miracles..If you can place your bullet at 300 yards with any 150 or 170 gr. 30-30 bullet then you will get a kill....
Perhaps some of the 130 gr. BarnesX spitzer HP or something like that would work, I don't know, but I don't see why it wouldn't..

My normal loading for the NEF 30-30 is 31 grains W748, 150 and 170 Hornady 30-30 bullets, WLR primer and any brass, sorted by manufacturer...The 150 is a roundnose and the 170 a flat point..Both very accurate and sighted in at 1.5 high at 100 yards..both give good hunting accuracy at 200 yards. Now for your question.....Have used the CT-BST 150 grain spire point plastic tip with the same power charge as above. I was surprised at the accuracy and the POI was almost the same as the two bullets mentioned above..Group with the CT-BST was at 1.2 inch..AS you know the NEFs are throated rather long (lawyers and pressure) and I seated the CT-BST out to 68mm COL. Tried the low priced but good R-P Core- Lokt 150 grain seated at 66mm and good group but POI dead on at 100 and 2 inch left....Have not fired the CT-BST at 200 yet...In my humble opinion, I believe that the CT-BST will give you a little flatter trajectory, but I do not believe that you find a good 300 yard load for the 30-30. I am not saying that some people cannot hit consistantly at 300 yards with the 30-30, its just that 200 is the ethical shot for me and no further...The claim has always been that the CT-BST and the Nosler BT Green tip are to fragile for heavy game(elk), but should be good for whitetail. Looked at expansion tests in different medias and looks like at 1900-2300 fps the CT-BST will open effectively on a boiler room shot on white tail...This fall we shall see...SB
what about a 30-30 improved, it looks like there could be a lot of improving you could do, how much does a gun smith charge for this sort of thing being a NEF this would prolly be an easy job. What sort of velocities does the 30-30 normally run?? I would think the ballitic tip would work well in the 30-30 cause of its slower speeds

They can be improved but I'll pick up a .300 Savage before doing that. I shoot Sierra 150 gr. spitzer flat bases from my T/C carbine, 22" barrel, Weaver K2.5, Reloader 15. I have chrony'd 2500 fps with less than max loads but found best accuracy(sub MOA) a bit shy of 2400 fps. I think RX15 is the powder of choice for the round and use in with fine results in the Mod 94 as well. As to the question, I would not hesitate to drop the hammer on a deer at 300 yds with this combo although I migh prefer Ballistic Tips at that range. Never got around to working up a load with them.
I've also used the 130 gr Hornady Interlock spire point (not the 130 gr pistol bullet version) over a max load of H-335 and a 150 gr Win Power Point over IMR-4064 or IMR-3031 with good results in a Savage 340 bolt action - but the magazine limits the OAL of the load.
Using the Remington 125g PSP and a good load of H335, I have a load that will drop a coyote as good at 250 yards as my .22-250 will. That is out of a bolt action Stevens model 325. I have more fun shooting the .30-30 than my .22-250.
