Ive just bought a pound of H322. Having tried the H4198, no luck really with 53-55 gn bullets, seems to eratic in the velocities.

Rifle is a SAKO L461 with 20" barrel.

Using Horndy 53gn hp #2250 and Seirra 55gn #1390 bullets.

Any other thoughts on accurate loads for this caliber. Im new to this and cant find one YET?

Just tested the H322 with the Hornady 53gn #2250
22gn of H322, 0.4" at 100. Was only a 3 shot group but it stood out from the rest from 21-22.5 gn
C.O.A.L was 56mm. WSR primer. Norma brass.
This is already better than the H4198 ever did!!

The Sierra 55gn #1390 did well at 0.7".

I know its not great, but for a beginner! Will make a batch of 20 or so and see how they go.

Cheers for your help again.

Although 4198 ususally gives high spreads in velocity from shot-to-shot, it is also usually not inaccurate. I don't use it much because it meters poorly and there are other powders that do better (in some ways) than 4198. If you are having accuracy problems, it is likely some factor other than powder.

FWIW, I use 4895 or H335 in my .222 with 50 grain Speer TNT's.

I'm guessing that your 20" barrel Sako is the model with the full Mannlicher stock. Check how the stock is bearing against the barrel. This is a common problem with full-length stocks.

If you want to stick with H-322 then for 53 grain:
H-322 From 18.5 grains to 22.5 grains
Remington 7-1/2 Primer

and for 55 grain:
H-322 From 19.0 grains to 22.5 grains
Remington 7-1/2 Primer

But...I would suggest you try RL-12 (if you can get it):

53 grain:
RL-12 From 24.0 grains to 26.0 grains
Remington 7-1/2 Primer

55 grain:
RL-12 From 22.0 grains to 26.0 grains
Remington 7-1/2 Primer

Switch bullets not powder. Try 50 Blitz, 50SX or the 40 V-Max

I have to second stepchilds luck with his 222.

A good friend had one in the Sako vixen he bought in the 1960s. He was a doctor but it was his favorite rifle. It shot anything and everything well.

I loaded him up some RL 7 with 50 grain
bullets with it for him to try. He went out and purchased about 10 pounds of RL 7 after an afternoon at the range with it.

Guess you would call that impressed. [Razz] [Roll Eyes] [Cool]
