I'm fairly new to reloading, mostly pistol. Thinking of starting to do rifle. looking through the manuals I have and what I've found on-line seems like varget is a popular powder. The loads for the calibers I'm loading list both Varget and imr4895. Looking at the burn rate chart shows varget is a little slower burning. I can get imr4895. Other than the burn rate what are the pros and cons between the two? thank you, David

The burn rates b/w Imr 4895 & Varget are quite similar. Varget has been reported to be somewhat inconsistent from lot to lot----in the 308 Win----by some experienced/knowledgeable shooters.
As for availability , get what you can find !
You did no say what cartridge(s) you are loading. Might help.

I'm in about the same boat as you. I just started reloadng rifle (only 7.62x54R so far) about a month ago. Imr4895 has been good to me so far and I would love to try Varget if I can ever find it. If you are doing .308 Win, you may have simelar results because they have simelar balistics, but of course your mileage may vary.

Sorry, the calibers I'd like to do are .223, .243 and .308. One thing I liked was I can use one powder for all three.

Use what you can get; 4895 is very versatile for medium capacity cases. It will work for all your current needs.
