I don't use 4831 but it seems like way too much to me. 4831 is faster than 4350 and 72 grains of that behind a 210 in my .338 is warm. What manual did you get that load from ????

Sorry, I think 4350 is faster burning than 4831...

I also prefer 4350 with a 225 gr bullet. 4831 is a bit too bulky.

The Nosler book I have lists a load of H4831sc for a .338 225 grain bullet - Maximum load 75 grains.

I know the sc isn't the same as the regular, but still, 78 grains of regular H4831 is getting quite hot for that bullet.

Not sure you can get that much H4831 in a case ... and I personally would not want to. Think that could be an overcharge. Way too exciting for my blood.

Would rather start lower and work up.

My .338 WM seems to prefer 4350 with 225s as well.

budy k9,
WAY 2 HOT!!!
my hodgdon#26 edition max is75.0 grains of H4831
my newest hodgdon#27 data manuals max is 74.5 of H4831 and its compressed!!!! both above manuals use hornadys 225 gr. spire-point. your reloading swifts a-frame i'd back down even more. you should do a latter test start at 72.0 grains and work up, you''ll find your sweet spot at the same time!
load safe ,regards

Yup! Way too much. Ran your numbers thru my copy of Quickload. Listed P-max for the .338 Mag. is 62366 PSI. Your load showed 68140 PSI and a vel. of 2886 - assuming a 24" barrel.
I'd really back 'er off. Bear in Fairbanks

IMR 4350 is called the "miracle" powder for many reasons. 4831 is a good, albiet bulky, choice. The new SC/SSC powders have changed the equation as have the RL powders. The 338 Winchester will always be a 2700f/s elk thumper, and I can think of no other cartridge that offers as much without more recoil, or weight.

I dont shoot the 225 A-Frame but I have a load that shows great promise for the 250 grain A-Frame. 73 grains of RL-19 is giving me 2660 with the bigger 250. I found H4350 to work real well with the 210 TSX hovering at 2950 with 72 grains. It appears that theres lots of stuff that works. I can tell you that at least for me H4831SC did not, I cant stuff enough of the stuff in a case to get the velocities that RL-19 and H4350 is giving. So far it appears that as far as the 338WM goes guys commonoy use RL-19,RL-22, IMR4350, H4350, RL-25, and H4831. I would pick one and try it out. Work up!

Pulled the bullets and yes there was 78 grains of H4831 as listed on his loading data. Highly compressed. Pulled all bullets and discarded the powder and primers. Will use my load and stay safe. Thanks to all
