Has anybody found a accurate load for remington woodmaster 30-06 semi auto? I have tried several loads and groups sizes very from best 5 inch to worst 8.5 inch. Might there be something wrong with the rifle or could it be the barrel over heating too quickly and spraying shots ??

A man bought me one to be sighted in the other day. I took it to the range with an off the shelf box of corelokts 150 grain and after a few shots it was sighted 2" high at 100 yards and the groups was around the 1.3-1.4 range.......I was impressed actually.

I've seen this model like yours unable to shoot any better than the description you've provided. I wish I knew what to do for them but it's like this....some shoot and some don't.

It's not a model I'd recommend to anyone.

I am with Vapodog...I have test fired 3 of these and the best one was 2.5 inch groups...the worst was 6 inch groups...this rifle has a history of being horrible inaccurate.

If I recall correctly it has to do with forend mounting system causing variable pressures on the action and the bbl

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

The target on the right is from my 742 Carbine (30-06) at 100 yards.

Not target good but absolutly minute of deer.

They are not known for accuracy, in fact quite the opposite..Most autos are not accurate..The 760 pumps have a great reputation for accuracy...

Nice groups you have there, but you can attribute that to the short stiff barrel IMO, that is usually a pretty good cure....

I'd say if the rifle is in good shape, ie: not too old, worn out, and assuming you have a scope on it and your're shooting off bags, front and rear, that the scope is defective, or the mounts are loose, something on that order.
Otherwise, I've loaded for a hunting buddy's 742, and loaded 57grs. H4350 with 150 Hornady SPs. When he sighted it in, he was resting the barrel on the tree limb, yeah, thats the way to do it, so he was getting vertical stringing, DUH! Wasted a whole box of 50, doing that. Once I showed him how to do it, his groups came together, can't remember how big or small the groups were, but he shot several deer with it that year.
If I were to reload for a 742 today, would go with about 51grs. RE15 under 150 Hornady SP, 53.6 is the max in the Alliant catalog. Work up, of course, especially with an auto. I'd never use a MAX load in an auto, 1-2grs. below usually works fine, though. Jay

My 742 has been sitting in the gun safe for I know over 14 years. The load I shot was hornady 150 gr/ 52.5 grs IMR 4064. The best I can remember it shot pretty good Have taken a lot of deer with it.
Need to get it out and try it again when I get time.

That is not unusual for 742s as accuracy seems to be very inconsistant from rifle to rifle.I have seen some that grouped around 1-1/2" and some that grouped 5" to 6" with most in the 2" to 3" range. You may get a good one but the odds are not great.

Maybe, but probably not anything seriously wrong with the rifle.

1. Are you loading ammo for it, or using factory ammo?

1a. How many types of factory ammo have you tried?
1b. Did you try different Bullet weights in the factory ammo?

1c. How many types of Bullets and Powder have you tried with your Reloads?
1d. Did you try different Bullet weights in your Reloads?
1e. Do you Develop Loads from below, or Randomly pick a Load from a Reloading Manual and load it up?

2. How many shots do you put in a group?

3. How quickly do you fire the above shots?

4. After shooting a group, if you touch the barrel can you hold your hand on it for 30 seconds?

5. Do you take your Cleaning Equipment to the Range with you?
5a. How often do you clean between shots at the Range?

6. How many rifles do you have with you when you go to the Range?

7. What is the "shape" of the Target you are shooting at.

8. Describe what you have the rifle resting on when you are "Sighting In".

9. What is the typical group size of your most accurate rifle?

My mother hunted with a 742 carbine in 06 for many years.

When I attempted to shoot my typical H 4831 handloads in it, I couldn't keep them inside a paper plate at 100 yds.

All was well after I switched to IMR 3031 behind a 165 gr bullet.

Her rifle always exhibited decent hunting accuract from any factory 150 gr loads she tried.

Some of these guys have provided good tips. I had a 742 in .308 that shot fine when I got it. I put quite a few rounds through the gun and it seemed to become in-accurate. I wish I knew about getting all the copper out of the barrel back then.....It still might be a good shooter. I'd make sure the barrel is totally clean, let it cool between shots, be sure you are resting on the forearm (not the barrel). If these don't work I'd take it to a gunsmith that knows the 742 and have him check hardware and barrel crown as well as a possible scope of the barrel for defects/fouling.

Well I tried the retired 742 yesterday but things didn't work out right.Had 2 clips with 3 bullets each, shot first clip fine secaon clip first 2 bullets fine into a 2 1/2 in group, but rifle jamed with the last bullet hung up in chamber and the bolt not fully closed.Tried to get the bolt back but won't budge, took the triger group out tried pecking the bolt back with a wood block won't budge.
Had this rifle many years, like I said it has been sitting in the gun safe over 14 years, never had it to jam on me all the years I hunted with it,any susgestions how to get the bolt back without haveing to take it to a gunsmith??Have to be carefull with it because it does have a live round in it but the bolt isn't all the way forward, can see three of the locking lugs if I look in the action. It has been so long I don't remember even how to start taking it apart.
