Paul ReedWinchester Supreme 780 being discontinued
My dealer informed me that Winchester is discontinuing the Supreme 780 powder. He had a special price on it for $15/pound. I picked up two pounds to play with in a few magnums I have. I can't remember when I last paid $15 a pound for powder. Stock up if you use this powder.

RapidrobThat is a shame. It is a great powder. I have not seen a pound for a long time.

TexKDYeah it is pretty good stuff. Did he say what they might replace it with.
I haven't seen any around either. Of course nothing much is around in ammo and components.

TexKDThank you butch. Is that the H equivalent ?

metalbeaterW780 was developed for the WSMs and SSWSMs. Since with the exception of the 300, they have all pretty much flopped, the demand is probably low. H414/W760 is faster and not a substitute
Superperformance and H100V are very close and have the same advantage of high density for weight as 780. I have used a lot of 780 in short mags where it works very well. When you get into "regular" magnums (7mm rem, 300 WM, 300 H&H) 4831 remains the powder of choice as space is not an issue. RL 22 & 25 also shine in regular magnums.

jeffeossoMB,
i think you have some data wrong... 780 existed a LONG TIME before the wsm wssm (not sswsm)
06 January 2014, 06:25
Paul ReedI believe Jeff is correct...that powder was available in a variety of flavors/names for a number of years, for example 780-BR, it was just renamed to try to capitalize on the WSMs. I'm not implying the powders were exact and data can be exchanged but they were all close formulations for large cases/slow powder. It seems that Winchester has always had trouble selling a slow powder but with 760, 748 etc. they have had great success.

TexKDWhile I don't know this to be true, I was told a couple of times and I believe it used to be stated on the Winchester site for components back when that existed, that this 780 Supreme was used by Winchester to load some of their excellent factory loaded ammunition in 270 Win, 7MM Rem Mag etc .
06 January 2014, 15:42
ted thornIt is the powder used in the Supreme line of factory loadings
Some of you will know these as the Combine Technology Balistic Tips sitting in a nickel plated case

PaulSWinchester is always deleting one powder and then replacing it with another. That is why I switched to Hodgdon powders. They replace 785 with 780 and they will replace 780 with something else but you never know how long a powder will be available and you end up having to work up new loads with the new powder. They have done the same thing with 230 powder and replaced it with 231 and their shotgun powders. It just got to be too much so I switched to Hodgdon and have never looked back.
Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

kaboomWin 780 was introduced in the spring of 2008 and is a bit faster than 785 was.

HectorIf my memory serves me correctly WW brought out the WW780 in the late 80's 0r early 90's and then discontinued. At some later date they brought it back as 785, then discontinued and brought it back as 780, and now discontinuing again. Used to load 240 Weatherby with 780 and worked great but sources to get were unreliable. Also velocities were a little slow compared to H4831.

Hector,
The two powders are very different. The load data is not interchangeable. I can't figure out why they didn't just introduce the new powder and keep marketing the old one. They get it in their head that they are going to use X powder and the one on their list that is closest to it gets the axe. Not a good way to market powders.
I don't think Hodgdon markets the same powder under a different name but they duplicate the 231 with HP-38, 296 with H110, 760 with H414 and the old 540 with HS-6. All of them the same powders under a different name, manufactured by the same company.
Does anyone know of any others?

crbutlerActually Hodgdon distributes the Winchester powders, which to the best of my knowledge are still made by Olin.
Hodgdon also distributes a bunch of other powders made in other countries as well as IMR powders. A lot of their popular stuff is from Australia. I don't think they actually make anything, rather they are a distributor.

BaldhunterI've tried 780 it and compared it to the discontinued Winchester WXR and Reloader-22.Loaded equally, all three group about the same and the velocities are about the same.

PaulSOlin never manufactured powders for the reloader. They are made by the same company that makes the Hodgdon double based powders. The two companies market the same powders under different names. W231 is the same as HP-38, W296 is the same as H110, and W760 is the same as H414. Hodgdon also markets some of the deleted Winchester powders such as HS-6 which is the same powder that Winchester sold as W540.

When is the last time Win. ever made powder? I have some old one pounders that are called Magnum rifle. Must be slower than 760. FS

Arniet760/414 are made by St. Marks Powder Company. In Florida, I think owned by General Dynamics now. Trying to remember, but I think it is an old Olin plant. What a web we weave.
