I'm having a hard time getting the 130 grain speers to group for me in my Win 94 in 30-30.

What powders have you had luck with using the 130's

I'm sure part of my problem is that they are wayyyyyyy off of the lands. The 130 is far more slim in the front and I can't set out more than I already have or they will not fit through the action.

I had some success with 4895 using the Sierra 125 JHP years ago but don't shoot the lighter weights anymore. 150 grain bullets dearly love Reloader 15 in both of my 30-30's, you might wnat to give it a try.

I love 30/30 questions. No one seems to load the 30/30 much, and I personally love handloading it.

I have learned several things about the 30/30 for accuracy.

1. If you can back off the max velocity ( if you can call 2200 fps max velocity without laughing), the accuracy increases. 1800 to 2000 fps are great, the closer to 1800 the more the groups tighten up a lot.

2. The secret to getting there is the opposite of what most people think. Either use a FAST powder, the best is SR 4759 in my opinion. 18 to 20 grains of it is great.

The other secret is just the opposite. Use a SLOW powder. Like 4350 or 4831 for example. They will be low pressure loads, but their velocity is back in that 1800 fps range.

Surprisingly also you are not giving up that much point blank range. I use bullets meant for the 30/30 a lot in my downloaded hunting ammo in 30/06, as they are designed to open at those lower velocities.

The most accurate of the regularly used powders in my experiences have been IMR 3031 and RL 7.

My problem child 30/30 loves the SR 4759 as a powder. Anything else, (except a 220 grain RN load I use on it), you can get better accuracy out of a sling shot.

Cheers and good shooting

Thanks, I may try the 4759 as I have 5 pounds of it,,,shoot alot in my ML2

what speed were you getting with 20 grains and a 130 or 150,,,,It may just be the bullet, I get 1.5 moa all day long with the winchester 150 grain power points even the factory winchester loads.

I'll look for those other powders around here, I have been using Varget with the 150s with good results, but at best 3moa with the 130s and up to 6moa with some loads,,,Some 5 shot groups will have 2-3 that are alright 1.5 or so then a couple fliers that are 2-3 inches away.

Gun shoot very consistant with the 150s 90% or better in 2moa and most in 1.5,,,,
