-I also posted this in Big Game- I imagine that many of you are familiar with the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. For those of you who aren't, it is the nations largest shooting facility and the host of many national class events. Each summer, the Whittington center holds two, two-week sessions of its Adventure Camp. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 13-17. In a two week session the campers recieve NRA certified instruction in the disciplines of rifle, pistol, shotgun, and muzzleloader. They are exposed to many aspects of each basic discipline; from high power silhouette to spending time on the 1,000 yard range. They will spend time on the trap, skeet, and sporting clays ranges. Also, each camper is enrolled in a New Mexico hunter education course and they leave with their hunter ed. certification. As I said, the camp runs for two weeks. The cost is $850.00 and includes all firearms and ammunition, expert instruction, lodging, and all meals. You may have noticed the ads for the camp in the back of your American Rifleman and American Hunter magazines. I have personally been a part of the camp staff for seven years now, and it turns out that we have a few remaining slots to fill in each session for this summer. I have seen hundreds of kids go through the program and it is truly a life changing experience. Kids that play soccer or baseball have camps catering to their interests. The Whittington Adventure is for those youngsters out there whose interests lie in hunting and/or the shooting sports. It is also an excellent environment for kids to recieve their first exposure to the shooting sports. You can visit the Whittington Center's website, www.nrawc.org, for more information. If you become interested, call Steven Giordano at (505) 445-3615. He is the Whittington Center's Assistant Program Director and is in charge of the program. My son's not old enough for it now, but in 5 or 6 years I might give it some serious consideration when he is old enough. | |||
