Hey everyone...

Running into a problem with some .30-06 brass I'm trying to reform into .25-06.

I've tried it going from a .270 die set first and then a .25-06 and I've gone straight to .25-06. No matter which route, I get a "donut" at the base of the neck.

I've read a few posts on here and other forums where it doesn't seem other people are running into this problem. Any suggestions?

FWIW, I'm using FL RCBS dies.

I have had to neck turn brass when necking down like this, you have little option but to outside neckturn after resizing although I did once get Forster to grind me up a special inside neck reamer to even up the necks of 416 Rigby cases that I had made from 378 Wby cases with the belts turned off. There was a fair sort of donut where the shoulder was set back.

Have you annealed the necks?

Reading it again, does the resized shell chamber? It sounds like it is not sizing all the way down to the base of the neck? If the die is screwed all the way down to where it is touching the shellholder you can try grinding a little off the top of the shellholder if that is the case.

Also, I am a big fan of imperial sizing wax for difficult problems.

My first response is a question. How is the donut harming your shooting? If it isn't, why fret over it?

From intentionally using internal neck donuts over years of competition, I can assure you it need not harm your accuracy. Likewise I never suffered any pressure problems because of it.

Of course it could cause a problem such as preventing the chambering of loaded ammo, if the bullet is forced past the donut when originally being seated and moves it to the outside of the case.

But is it harming use of the cartridges like that?
