I am wanting to make up some heavy cast bullet loads for my NEF 45-70, should I load from the data for Trapdoors or Marlins?

The Handi-Rifle is also chambered in the 450 Marlin, therefore it is ok to use the 45-70 Marlin data. If your bullets are not gas checked I would stick with the trapdoor loads.

I went through the process of stress analysis on my 45/70 handi rifle and concluded that the action is stronger than the brass.

Someone on line challanged my conclusion because I am not a real gun designer. So I validated my calculations with a load work up of Unique and 405 gr bullets until the brass flowed into the extractor misfit area. Still the detractors were not convinced of either the calculation or the validation test.

Life is too short to spend in flame wars with such types.

this is from NEI...

They wont rebarrel any rifle, except the "ultra" action, to 450. They told me it was a pressure/thrust issue, but the guy couldn't back it up with figures.

I have a rebarrel from 223 to 45/70 at NEI, right now, and I'll try the various loads... but, remember, I am rather cautous on these things

I have a 45-70 handi-rifle myself, and it is safe to run Marlin pressure levels in it. I have for some time now. Even the packaging for Buffalo Bore ammo indicates that it is safe to fire in HR rifles. hope this helps. maxman

Yes, the Handi Rifle will handle the Marlin level loads. Hold on tight, as this little rifle will knock the snot outta ya with the hot loads. Fun, though.

AMEN, Brother, amen!

The question ain't how much the Handi will take, it's how much your shoulder will take.

I shoot for pleasure, not pain.
