I am a big fan of the good ole 270 win, I am having a multipurpose rifle put together in 270 win, that has a slightly heavier barrel than a magnum, I plan to use it for big game hunting and wacking yotes way out there.
I got to checking ballistics the 308 is so popular for long range but if you compare a 168 SMK @2800 to a 135grn SMK@3100 in the 270 win, you will find that the 270 utterly stomps the 308, at all ranges, winddrift, total drop, there is something like a 40" elevation and 300fps advantage for the 270 win at 1000yds, run the same comparison with the same bullet in a 30-06 and the results are almost identical, So why has the 270 win been so forgotten when it comes to 1000 yd stuff

Three things: Ballistics, bullets, recoil.

In my little patch of the woods, the 1000 yard game has gone to cartridges such as 6.5-284, 6.5-08, and a whole bunch of 6mm and 6.5 mm wildcats.

For a couple of decades, if you were shooting service rifle class, you shot 30 caliber. Service rifles are either 30-06, 308, or now, .223. There are a bunch of long range service rifle only competitions at the National Matches. Palma is shot with a 308 Winchester, which evens out worldwide competitions. The military no longer supports civilian shooting programs, so without the free brass and cheap ammo, people are inclined to experiment with non military cartridges.

30 caliber rifles are not the ultimate in long range shooting. The wind ballistics are not that great, and they kick hard. I know a few who have tried 300 Win Mags and after getting stomped to death they trade the rifle to some other unsuspecting wide eyed newbie. The ballistics of even 200 grain bullets in a 308 or 30-06 are vastly inferior to a 6.5mm.

So why not a .270? . It kicks harder than a 6.5-08. It is an overbore cartridge, barrel life would not provide any advantage, probably wears faster than any 6.5 mm. And don’t forget match bullets. You can’t compete without the best match bullets. That’s why the 6.5 calibers languished for so long, the only good consistent match bullets for years were in 30 caliber. But now, great bullets are available in the smaller calibers.

I never compared the 270 to anything in the 6.5 bore, I mainly am stateing its vastly superior ballistically in a target scenerio compared to anything short of a 300mag. The 6.5 bore has an advantage, but lets not forget the 270 win has been around since 1925, the 6.5 bores came along much later in popularity, the 6.5's have the benefit of a much better bullet selection, what if the 270 had the same selection would the difference be that great?? to me the 270 makes much more sense than any of the 30 cals

THe 6.5s have been widely popular in Europe for decades. There are just more high quality match bullets available for the 6.5 than the .270. I shoot a .260ai @ 142grsmk or 139grLapua @ 2850fps is very pleasent to shoot.
