I reload for three different calibres 243 win, 270 win, 30-06 springfield. As of the moment I am using IMR 4350 for all three, and I was wondering if maybe I should be using trying something differnt/better for these, but I dont really want to get into buyin 3 different powders for these calibres just lookin for an all round powder, as I have just finished off the last of the IMR4350. The 243 and 270 will be used for deer/varmint and the 30-06 will be used for manly deer/moose. IMR 4064 a good powder?

Ranger,

We are reportedly blessed with 160 different reloading powders now. I don't know what is easily available in your area, but I would be tempted to choose from one of those. I have loaded .243 Win, 6.5-'06, .280 Rem and '06 too, and I think I would look at one of the "extreme" (i.e. wider temperature range of performance) versions of 4350.

I'ld would think H4350, IMR4831 & RL19 would give you a bit more range of bullet choice in those three carts. assuming you are using heavier pills in the .243.

Buy 8 lbs of surplus IMR 4895 and you're good to go for quite a while. It's not the fastest 270 powder but it gets close.

Yep, Robert @Sierra told me IMR4064 would work on all 3. But, I think you're going to find that 1 pound of powder isn't going to last very long with 3 different cartridges. 100rds of 30-06 will eat up 4800 grains of 4064, 4900grs with the 270, of course you know thats over 7000 grains, right there. I'd get RE19 for the 270 and 06, and Varget for the 243, just a suggestion. I got over 11 different types of powder and I don't shoot that much. Jay

If you are shooting heavier bullets in all 3 cartridges, you may want to try Reloder 22. I got very good results in my .243's with Reloder 22 iwth 100 gr bullets, as well as with the 30-06 with the 165 and 180 gr bullets. Sure IMR-4895 or IMR-4064 will work with all 3, but I seriously doubt you will achieve top accuracy from all 3 with a faster burning powder like 4895 or 4064. And I know you will not get top velocity out of the .243 or .270 unless you use slower burners(i.e. 4350 or slower), assuming you are using big game weight bullets in them.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

Ditto to 2ndtimer's post.

R22 will work w/ the heavy bullets.

Good Luck!

There is probably no powder that will work any better in all three cartridges than 4350. For a particular bullet weight, there may be powders that will give very slightly higher optimum velocities in one of the cartridges or another, but if you're successful with 4350, by all means stick with it!

Well I thought maybe I was missing something with all these powder choices, but I guess IMR 4350 I will stick with since I already have loads worked up for these cartridges. Thanks for the help people.

IMR 4350 is always a good choice for those three cartridges, plus the 338 Win. Mag., plus the 375 H&H, etc., etc.

I also suggest that you try IMR 4831, Reloader 19, and H-4350SC.

At the moment I read your title, my very first thought was IMR 4350 for the cartridges you named. Then as I read further, that was the powder you had.

If you are simply interested in working up more loads, then I would either make the lateral move to H4350 or try a bit slower powder. I personally like a huge selection of powders. My initial trials for 270 always begin with 4831. The 6mm always start with 4350.

The 30.06 is always dependant on bullet weight, whereas the other 2 are not. For 180 and smaller slugs, it's 4350 first, but 180 and up it is Re22. (obviously I cannot make up my mind between the 2 for 180 slugs).

If all of that wasn't long enough, I revert back to my intial thought and advice: Stick with a 4350 for all 3 and keep smiling.

Howdy fellas-

It's been quite a while since I have posted. I was living in KS the last time I posted much. Now I'm back in CA. ughhhh. It's been so long since I posted that I couldn't even remember my old username, so now I'm GibR.

Now that the reintro is done-

I load for all three and have found that H4831sc gives me excellent performance with 100s in the 243, 130-150 in 270, and 165-180 in the '06. RL22 has given equally great results. Just my .02

Glad to be back - GibR

There may be other powders that would do as well, like H414, RE 19, RE22, or one of the other 4350's. But I think you've chosen pretty well already for those three rounds!! IMR 4350 works great in all of those.

I'm fairly new in the game, but I have been able to produce 1/4 MOA groups with 55 grains of H4831SC and 130 grain Combined Technologies Ballistic Tip bullets in my .270. I have taken 3 whitetails with that load, and it practically dropped them where they stood.
