Lotsa folks use RX7 with success. Works fine in a friends 45-70 with 510 gr lead, don't know about the jacketed things though.

You don't say what rifle you are using, so my response is based on my experience with the .45-70 in a Marlin 1895. I like RL-7 for the 300 gr. Hornady. For the 350 and 400 gr. bullets I prefer H-332. I have also had good luck with IMR-3031, so you may want to try it too.

this will be the first time i've "bothered" to reload 45/70... and will be loading 405 rems in a handyrifle...

any one have experience with rel 7 and or blc2 in that and want to share data?

jeffe

Looks to me like he said it was a Handi-rifle.

No R7 or Blc2, but I've had good luck with a 405gr cast bullet and 13gr unique, makes an accurate plinkin load in my handi. Also have used 28gr 2400 and 350gr hornady RN, both these loads shoot 2" or less @100yds.

In my Ruger No. 1, I have used up to 60 grains of RE 7 < !--color-->with the Barnes Original 400 grain semi-spitzer for a MV of 2270 FPS and about 1.5 MOA three-shot groups. This load is no fun to shoot, developing 55 Ft/Lb of recoil. I find Re 7 and IMR 3031 to be the best of the powders I have used in the .45/70, but have not tried Ball C2, H322, or H335. These might be as good.

Note that the 60 grain load was developed some years ago, and the recent lots of RE 7 might be hotter than what I used. In any case, that 60 grain load is HOTTT!! Work up slowly, and use only a Ruger No. 1, Browning High Wall, or Siamese Mauser if you try it!!

Oh, I say, M'Lord! Is anything worn under your kilt? Nay, nay, lassie! It's as good as it ever was! Benny Hill

Jeffe - Have had good results from my .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun with Reloader 7 and Remington's 405 grain FNSP. I think it's a great combination in the .45-70.

I've loaded the combo in both Winchester and Remington cases, generally with standard CCI large rifle primers, sometimes with Federal 210's.

I've played with charge weights from 45 grains to 49 grains. There is a difference... At 49 grains the little gun smacks back at the shooter briskly... At 45 grains it's a pussycat - with teeth!

Accuracy has been excellent to 200 yards, the farthest I've pushed the Guide Gun. I just don't see my little Guide Gun as a long-range rifle.

A couple of weeks ago I made my first .45-70 kill, just a nice mulie doe at about 70 - 80 yards. Used the mild load, 45 grains of Re-7 and Remington's 405 grain bullet. It worked like a champ - she was literally knocked off her feet and back when the bullet struck. Very clean results on target too - punched through the chest w/what appeared to be minimal expansion. Not much in the way of bloodshot meat, just one very dead deer, immobile upon impact.

Have also shot my friend's Handi-Rifle, and it's a hoot. I don't know the specs on his load, but it's a 350 grain Speer loaded hot. It is one heck of a neat little gun, although from shooting high recoil loads, he's had to epoxy the rear sight back in place...

I still think the Re-7 powder and Remington's 405 grain bullet is an excellent combination, but would highly recommend starting at the 45 grain level and seeing how much more recoil you personally want to deal with in such a lightweight little gun.

Regards, Guy

if my calcs are right, this little 7# handirifle will recoil at ~51ftlbs... just a love tap, compared to my other rifles... 376 steyr, 458 win mag, 416 rem, 500 jeffery, even my 8 caliber kodiak double... <grin>

you know, i AM a recoil junkie!!

or, to put it in perspective, about 1/2 of a 550 express (which still aint done ) or 40% of a 577...

just enough to say "yep, you pulled the trigger:

heh
