Load with Primer Only

Hello, I am new to reloading and have a question about primers.First how loud are they and second how much power do they produce . If you loaded a clean brass with a primer and a bullet only what would happen . We have some rat problems and I was thinking of loading a .223 with a primer only and a 55 grain bullet to "take care of them" ...

Would it work? How loud would it be?
Thanks for ank personal experience you can share with me .. Don J.

Why not just use subsonic 22 loads? There are some out there that are quieter than a pellet gun.

If the bullet leaves the case it will get stuck in the throat of the barrel.

Try a .22 cb short or .22 short. Another option is a pellet gun.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

Yes. Pellet gun. Especially if you are somewhere you need to worry about the noise.

Aquilla Colibri for your 22 rimfire. Rats are in deep trouble.

1. No, it would not work. The bullet will become stuck in the bore. How do I know? I did it once by mistake.

2. I have shot primer only rubber and plastic projectiles and they're not very loud. I would be concerned about ricochet and personal injury in tight quarters with the rubber .44 caliber bullets I used. I've used plastic bullets in a .308 and they were deadly at very close range on things like groundhogs.

Take a look at Widener's supply, they have a closeout on plastic bullets in 308
These are NOT toys but very fast light plastic projectiles.
Here is a clip from the site

This is not blank ammo. This is not "play" ammo. This is not "airsoft" ammo. This is REAL AMMO for REAL FIREARMS! The 10gr projectile fires at around 4700 FPS and has the ballistics of a metal projectile.

May be too loud and fast for your rat needs but just throwing it out there.

i've used primers with my hornet brass and pellets, that works. but i would recommend sub-sonic 22 CB Long or 22 CB Short, about 700fps, very quiet.

Paco Kelly wrote about enlarging the primer pocket in Hornet cases to where they would accept a shotgun primer, then loading 22-caliber pellets ahead of them. He claimed 600 fps and that they were deadly on feral dogs out to about 35 yards, if memory serves. I don't know why you couldn't do the same thing with 223 cases.
