I am loading a tack driver in .221 Rem Classic. A 40 gr V-max moly is pushed by 20 gr Rl-7 and my chrony shows an average of 3650? Any of you have experience with this?
My .221 TC contender with a 16 1/4" barrel gets right at 3250 with 19.0 RL 7. I haven't tried to push it past that. Do you get any signs of pressure? All the loading info. I can find on that combination or any other 40 gr. bullet lists 19.0 as max.

I used RL7 (19.5grains?)in my Fireball years ago, and seem to recall velocities with a 40 gr in the 3300fps range. Have since switched to AA1680 and LilGun, where my chrono'ed 40's average 3500fps.
I had to use a drop tube to get full loads of RL7 and H322 in a Fireball case, but both were excellent for accuracy.

skb2706: You bet I get pressure. I trim after third shot. My cases show a bright ring just ahead of the web like my 25-06 and 270. I start low and keep going until I have to stop. I respect to books but I know there is a margin of safety and if I can get away with it I will push it to the max as the groups tighten-up the faster it goes. The factory rounds are listed at about 2,150 fps or so, and 3,650 seems fast!
Mulerider: What did you have back then? Was it an XP-100? If so, maybe 3,650 isn't so fast!
I had a Rem 788 222 Rem setback to Fireball about 11 years ago. That's when the RL7 and H322 were my favs. Then tried the AA1680; great for speed with reasonable pressure. Then LilGun shows up, and it passes AA1680 in the speed department (at least with lighter bullets). My max loads w/40gr have hit 3600fps, but I backed off to the 3550 range, still damn efficient for that little case. Never recall RL7 hitting those speeds. Just got my 700 Classic back from Remington, as it had poor ejection (but basically the extractor would not hold the rim). It seems to work okay now.

My next venture will be trying Lilgun........the newest info from Hodgdon lists it with some pretty high end speeds for a .221. With my TC I don't really try to push it much.....something safe in your Classic might stretch out my frame. So far the 19.0 of RL under a 40 v max is the only load I have chronoed.......prairie dogs think everything else I have loaded was fast enough.
