I would like some of your advice on the most efficient powder to use in a 358 Shooting Times Alaskan.
It has a 27 inch stainless barrel and I would like your advice on powders to shoot 225, 250 and 300 grain bullets.

Hey 35nut, What you need is a copy of the Layne Simpson article in the September `92 Shooting Times. If you know anyone that has that magazine, get them to run you a copy.

Or, put your email address in here and I'll contact you about sending you a copy.

Powders in the article span form H414 up through H1000. So, if you have anything on the shelf between those Burning Rates, you will be able to do some Loading.

These are simulated results from Quickload at MAX LOADS (60,000PSI) The loads are for comparison only, check with the powder maker before loading. Back off 10% and work up, etc. I used your 27.5 inch barrel.

The net result is that VV-N560 gives best results for all bullets. If you want highest velocity (and don't mind highly compressed loads) get the VV-N560. I have gotten loads that compressed using a 24 inch aluminum arrow as a drop tube.

The H4350 gives good results, is only slightly compressed behind the lightest bullet, and is much more widely available in the US.

225 ABW Kodiak
100gr/VV-N560/3257fps (9% compressed)
91gr/H4350/3200fps
90gr/H414/3177fps
90gr/XMR4350/3166fps

250 ABW Kodiak
96gr/VV-N560/3104fps (7% compressed)
87gr/H4350/3034fps
86gr/H414/3015fps
86gr/XMR4350/2993fps

300 ABW Kodiak
90gr/VV-N560/2851fps (3% compressed)
88gr/IMR7828/2807fps
82gr/H4350/2763fps

As a general rule for non gas guns using modern cartridges, use whatever powder fills the case. If you have 100% loading density at factory or design pressure, you will eliminate any variation in powder postion and therefore, all else being equal, get better accuracy and more consistent velocities. My best loads are usually compressed loads of slow powder. You do want to use the powder that is the fastest available to you that can be used in a case filling compressed load. If you fill your trusty 30-06 case up with H-870 and seat a 150 grain bullet, don't expect much. That powder is way to slow. Look at your load table. Go to the slow end. Pick the powder that is just faster that the one where it got too slow and velocity dropped. That will be a good start.
