Tell me about the loads you are using and the velocity you are getting.

I haven't been impressed with my experience with 160 & 175's. My result were not much better than 7mm Remy

I had a Laredo Winny barrel and have picked up a LH Mod 70 with thin barrel for the action.

Thought I might try it before tearing it apart

Thanks,

I had a 26" laredo I just sold I could get 3600 with 120s and 3400 with 140s. QL (after the fact)says my pressures would have been between 65-70,000. I used my brass 4 times and pitched it.

Using QL to compare the 7mag and 7STW 160Accubonds in 26" barrels loaded to same STW max pressure QL shows equal velocity in the 3145-3160 range. The STW just needs 9grs more powder to do it. A compressed load of something like H870 in the STW using 17grs more powder than a 7mag does calculate a 40-50FPS gain over the 7mag.

As usual just my $.02

Thanks. I found in the first rifle I could get great MV with 120 to 140 wt. bullets, but those are not elk and moose bullets. I'll probably just shoot it a little and sell or change the barrel to something useful, which is why I got it in the first place.

The 7STW needs the right powder to get the velocities up there.I have not shot anything larger than 154grs out of mine and the powders that give me the best velocity were the double based Winchester WXR and Reloader-22.I agree,if you load for the 7mag you will find out it's a purty darn good cartridge and those bigger 7's really have to burn quite a bit more powder to really get a big jump on it.

Thanks,

If you want a good "do it all" load and bullet for the 7 STW, try the 145 Speer Grand Slam. I use this bullet for just about everthing with great results. Went to Africa in 2007 and took 11 head of plains game all the way up to Kudu.
Elk..........you bet....my wife took a nice New Mexico bull in 2008 at 245 yards with one shot.

I load with 80 grains of IMR 7828 with the 145 Grand Slam @ 3450 fps in my rifle. Extremely flat shooting and accurate.

Good luck! The 7 STW is one great round if you find the right combination.

If it can't take it......it can't stay.
