BeDefinitely gets there in a hurry....I've checked the velo with two chrono's from sea level to ~6500 ft several times...#4 Douglas air gauged contour...caused a few dust ups when compared with a few shorter barreled 338 Maggy's and factory ammo. Mad Roll Eyes

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...always amazing what a few thou difference causes..."CHOICE"...I don need no freaking choice...all that does is confuse the troops and cause dust ups... lol rotflmo Big Grin

What the Hey...Someone, Somewhere will make you/has made just about ANY bullet diameter, weight, type you could possibly want so CHOICE??? ALL IN THE MINDS of the salesmen looking for a sucker... shocker barf nilly

BUT...Choice is very nice anyway.

My BAD...I checked my Speer Bullets and all I had were Hot Cores, Mag Tips, and Grand Slams for rifle and Deep Curls for Pistol/straight walled cased calibers....so I let my fingers get away before my brain was in gear. Frowner

I had some bad experiences with Speer's quality control way back so basically stopped shooting them...bullet weights/ogive and OAL lengths were all over the place...but times have changed and all the Speer bullets I have on hand are just as UNIFORM as Nosler, Sierra and Hornady. I REALLY like the 350 gr 416 cal Mag Tip in my Taylor. I check the uniformity of EVERY bullet in EVERY box I buy...I know, waste of time...my time, my waste...what else to do when the snow is deep and the walls are closing in....and I DON'T like sloppy, inaccurate ammo.

My 338-06 was built back in the early to mid 60's in Powey Ca and the 'Smith used the Speer 270 gr bullet at 3.60" COAL to set the throat length...the reason for the extra velo...it takes 3-4 extra grains of 4320 to equal most manuals velos and an additional 3-4 to get that extra velo with NO pressure signs... reloaded the same 50 270 cases(15-20 times each) since the beginning until a few years back when I went to Lapua cases.

It wasn't known to be a good Penetrator on big brown bear.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Ya, I Really like the .416 , 350 gr Mag Tip. Wether in the Taylor or the Rem mag. Prolly work Great in the 416 Ruger also. Just a real good all around 416 bullet for not much money. They hold together pretty good also.
The 350 gr .458 bullet is a very good one also. I've killed brown bear with both. No complaints what so ever.
It seems like If the electro plating is accurate and consistent . It would work well for all their bullets.

I think that MOST of todays bullets are "almost perfect" as long as you match the bullet to the game and the velocity to the manufacturers specifications. "Out-of-the-box" accuracy is pretty close to 2 MOA or less without all the mucking around that I do...which is good for 400 yds if you're are any kind of marksman on any large game...most shots being within 200 yds or less "without the fudge factors" being added.

I wish those old discontinued 338-270 gr Speer's were still available because they cost half what the same type of bullet costs today and did very good work...just to see how they perform...but Hawk bullets has a very nice 275 RN will definitely work and If I can't find a specific bullet then I just go up or down a caliber and find happiness or just use what IS available.

Every once in a while I go digging around way back behind all the latest boxes and come across a 30-40 year old box of something that is long since discontinued I thought I had shot up...sometimes with notes stuck in the box referring to a long since gone rifle/pistol...and I can't remember WHY I saved them... Frowner Confused Roll Eyes coffee

With so many choices and so many shooting situations it's a wonder how well most bullets perform anyway and we have gotten so picky nowadays that if one bullet doesn't mushroom picture perfectly or do a "bang flop" first thing that happens is we go all nutz on the 'net.

Lots of water under the bridge since my first "legal" deer with my first 30-30 Win "real" deer gun and factory 170 gr ammo. lol Also my first attempt at making it a "magnum" by having a 30 Lever Power chamber done.

Bullet diversity is the "spice of life " in this game...but I really think it's "the Spice must flow" and the Madison avenue salesmen keeping the economy running smoothly and us suckers filled with B.S. and rallying to the call of Buy, Buy, Buy!!!! lol pinocchio Roll Eyes

So , according to the data I posted. Rl17 will do 2780 fps with the uncoated 225 gr Deep Curl.
If 17 will then H4350 will also.

Non, that's why I've shot so much stuff with the 458 and 416s I've had. That is what was needed for an if the wheels fell off situation. And if I wanted to kill a deer on the way to or from work. It was with what I always had with me . Which was a 416 or 458.
Then often they were the only rifle I owned at the time. So they got used for stuff that Most would . Nice thing about having a wife go to work with me. There was always a smaller rifle along ;-) Tho when she was my bear watch, I made up some 375 H+H equivalent loads . 300 gr X or TSX@ 2500 fps For her when she was packin my 458.
I only know of 1 guy that used the 275 gr Speer 338 bullet on brown bear. He said it didn't work as good as the 300 gr Barnes Originals 49 k jacket RNSN from the 338 Win mag. But, that it did work. When I could no longer get the 300 gr Barnes.
I started using the 275 gr Kodiak Bonded Core 338 bullets as soon as they came out. I really like them. I pushed them hard out of my Rugers at 2620 fps.

They just poke an inch diameter hole thru a deer. As long as u don't hit a big bone.
