does anyone have a 270 AI or know about how much more speed one can get with it, or is it even worth messing with??

At equal pressure 25-35FPS. Most likely more powder to get the same velocity. Since the 270 is already loaded to 65000 I would not waste my time or money. Unless I just wanted to play with an AI.

This comes from a shooter with more AI and full wildcats than factory.

Well I can tell you this,

in print, straight from the Horse's Mouth...

Parker Ackley in his book, said that the 270 was over bore in his opinion already..

He stated he saw no reason to 'Improve' the 270...

He actually was more supportive of a 270 on a 308 case, or an improved 57 mm case ( like the 7 x 57 Mauser case)....

And thus, we have the .277 Titas (Titus). When I worked in Tucson, one of the owners of the gunstore showed me his .308 casings necked down for 270 bullets and he called it the 277 Titas. It was his preferred caliber for the little Coues deer.

As far as Ackleys go, I think you'd be happier with a 280 AI. I think that if anyone goes through the process of owning and shooting one of the AI calibers, it is to have something a little different.

For example, I think a 277 Titas with a 110 grain bullet would be a great antelope caliber.

I had one for awhile, 50-75 fps was about all it would do over factory 270 Win. Not worth it unless you just like oddball stuff.

I went to a 270wsm and it's 150fps faster than 270win. I can tell no real difference inside of 400 yds, just more bloodshot meat. I doubt that you would notice 50fps, only a couple inches at 500yds anyway.

Now that Berger has come out with some VLD for the .277, we may see some more activity with the 270. IMO this has been the reason so few .270 out there and so many 6.5 and 7s.

I know the first rifle I built was a 280 not a 270 and one of the main reasons was bullet options. That was 30+ years ago.

Just curious but where did you get that info? One of my old hunting buddy's father manages a large gun store in the south. To this day, the 270 is still there most popular caliber rifle sold.

The last several years I've hunted in WY, I've talked with many wardens and biologists about rifles. Number one choice was the 270.

This isn't real research but I'm not sure I'd agree with there being more 6.5s and 7s out there than 270s.

I could be wrong. OOPS, unless you are referring back to a 270 Ackley. If so, brain fart on my end....I understood your comment to be referring to the 270 WIN.

While the .270 Winchester has been (and still is) one of the most popular factory ammo calibers the selection of bullets (and wildcat cartridges also) has lagged behind the 6.5mm and 7mm selections. For example its only been in the past few years that Sierra and Berger added any type of .277 match bullet to their line.

I shoot the 280AI and like the results and I would assume building a 270AI should produce appr the same gain just a different caliber is all. Since Nosler has 280AI brass be easy to neck down I'm thinking about opening the case up and doing a 30-06AI with a Broughton barrel. I'm shooting a custom 270 little over 3000fps with a 150gr bullet so I would think maybe around 3200fps plus for a 270AI.

Some of the better barrels that are being made today offer alot advantages when looking at Ackley calibers.

There is one guy on 24hrcampfire.com that build a 270AI haven't seen him post for awhile.
