I am very glad to have dicovered this site. As a new reloader I need all the help I can get. What kind of powder do y'all use for 30-06 and 25-06? There are so many out there. I know that I need to experiment with different bullet weights, cases primers, etc. I am not a wealthy person- in fact I guess I'm more of a CRB.I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Wahl, you can go two ways here. IMO, 4350 is THE powder for a 30-06 and it don't do bad in a 25-06. Or you can choose 4831 which sees a lot of use in the '06 and is a very good powder for the 25-06. If it was my choice, I'd go with the 4350.

Welcome to the AR forum. Click on 'find' above your first post and do a search through the archives for more discussions on this and every other topic you can think of. Years of info at your fingertips. I have settled on AA's MagPro for the 25-06, and H414 for the 30-06.

I use H4831SC for both the 30/06 and 25/06. It is the most accurate powder in my particular rifles. It gives excellent accuracy and good velocity in both. Bullets are 180 gr Sierra Pro-Hunter (30/06) and 117 gr Sierra Pro-Hunter (25/06). I wouldn't be surprised if RE22 did just as well, but see no reason to change. I have to admit to having more kinds of powder on hand than makes any sense. I love to experiment with new cartridges and loads. BUT, if I had to pick ONE powder for use in both, the 30-06 and the 25-06 it would be H 4350. (Without a doubt) R Flowers

+1 here, I probably have more different gunpowders right now than I can use but H4350 would be a good starting point for those two cartridges. Sillbeeman is right. IMR 4350 for 30-06, IMR 4831 for 25-06.

Go through the data and work up some different loads for your rifles. Any one of us could tell you what works in our rifles, but hey, it may not work in yours. I had a .30-06 that shot like a benchrest rifle with 165Gr Sierra BTHP and 49Gr of 4895. It was a lowly JC Higgins Model 50, FN action and Douglas barrel. It was stolen, and replaced with another FN action sporting a 24" Lilja spout. I'm still working on a load for that one. It doesn't care for the old rifles diet. .30-06 + 180 grs + 2750 ft/s = 4350. I think, that was Cooper thinkeng, when he wrote: "If you can´t get it done with a 180 grs bullet at 2700 ft, you probably won´t want to do it" You may get higher vel with slower powders ( RL - 22, 4831, 3100, N 550 ) but 4350 ist THE powder for that application - and many, many others.
