Try at 10 feet, and 15 feet. If there is a difference 10 is too close. Slow powders may affect
readings at 10 feet.
Good luck!

12-15 feet.

Even at that distance I've blown the sky screens off an F-1 w/ a Weatherby Mag Eeker.

Very true, I just can't bring myself to chrono my MLer loads. Those sabots will bust a screen right quick.

Thanks everyone for your input.I was setting it up at around 6' but the readings where all over the place (150 to 200 fps.difference).I tried setting it up at 8' for my .338 win.mag.and like Reloader stated good-bye sunscreens.Again thanks.

10-12 feet for me, but on the good advice of a friend (who killed a new chrony with a wad on the first shot!) I put a 4"x6" piece of lexan in front of the lcd screen when using BP guns and wadding. With fiber wads in my 10 bore bp rifle there is a fine "dusting" all over the chrono with each shot and I cracked the glass once with lubed felt wads!

If it's a Chrony, far enough to keep the unit from reading Gun Smoke and the 15 ' cable they supplied wasn't long enough to prevent that!!! Madroger

The last "chronograph" I shot over is about 12 hours away. Anywhere from 3-12 hours away makes them much less tempting to fool with.
