Hi,

Greetings from Scotland.

I have recently purchased a Winchester Mod 70 Heavy Varmint rifle in .22/250. I also got a reloading press for Christmas and I have began to load my own ammo for this rifle.

At present I The best load I have constructed is,

Nosler Ballistic Tip 50gr
35gr Hodgdon Varget
Remington cases
Norma superflash primers

I am presently using an O.A.L of 2.355

With this load I can achieve 3/4 inch-1 inch
5 round groups at 100 yards.

Has anyone owned one of these rifles and like me tried to develop a 1/2MOA load for it?

Is this rifle capable of 1/2 inch groups and if so how can I achieve that kind of performance?

I would be grateful if someone could point me the right direction.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Sounds like you're on the right track. You might try either IMR or H4895, both noted accuracy producers in 22-250, and either CCI or Federal Benchrest primers, if they're available in your area.
What is the situation in Scotland as regards purchase of components? I think we may be a little spoiled with the vast selection here in the States.
The 22-250 is always a delight to work with; you should be able to get under .5" with little effort.
Good luck,

V-Max,

I have the same rifle. So far I've gotten good results, but not what the I think the rifle is capable of, using the following:
Winchester brass, Sierra 52 gr HPBT MatchKings, 34.0 gr IMR 4895, Fed 210 primers with a COL of 2.350"...average group (Five 5-shot strings) 0.696". Smallest group was 0.523". Since then I have loaded some 50 and 55 gr V-Maxs, Varget and Fed 210M however I haven't tested them yet. The rifle has about 125 rounds through it, therefore not "broken-in" yet.

V-Max,

Welcome - it's nice to come across another UK poster here.

I can't offer the data you need but this is what works in my Tikka Supersport h/b .22/250, giving me 1/2 moa and which I've developed for foxing out around 200 metres:

V-Max 55gn and Winchester fmj 55gn (range use only)
38.4gn H380
Federal Match primers
Any old brass but usually Federal
COL 2.50"

Yesterday I made up some development loads with 33.5 - 36.5gn of Varget using the fmjs. I suspect I may need to go beyond 36.5 but until I've chrono'd these....

To decrease your group size you should play with col and powder load; you may need to consider getting your rifle bedded but personally I'd see what it can achieve in its current condition then you can assess what if anything is holding it back. Have you tried the 55gn V-Max? I think the 50gn is the same bullet but boat-tailed to shave the weight.

Good luck and keep posting here

22-250 is my favorite 22 caliber and I load for speed and accuracy. In the past 20 years I have tried 25+ powder combinations. I now only use one load for both 250's I shoot.

Bullet: 50-52 grain
Primer: CCI-Bench rest
Powder: H-414

I carfully increase the powder charge until I start to see presure signs on the brass. Typicaly, if I reduce the load 1/2 grain below this preasure piont, I get the best velocity and a 5 shot group that you can cover with a dime at 100 yds.

Shoot safe,
Mike
