Thanks again everyone, I'm off to work right now but will try some of these suggestions when I get home in a week or two. I'll have to check my bullet depth because I just measured a factory load of a friend and used that as the overal length. Anyways something to look forward to when I get home. I noticed some of you are using 50gr. bullets. I was told to stay away from those as they cause your barrel to burn out prematurely, any truth to this. Mike

mike,..lesser weight pills don't necessarily burn out the bore quicker. Here are some considerations rate of fire (ESPECIALLY WITH A SWIFT) must be kept at a slow enough rate to not overheat the barrel and prematurely erode the thoat. The very shallow shoulder angle and overbore nature of the case throw a LOT of plasma directly at the rifling lands which can and will erode it quickly when continually fired hot. the 1:14 twist your barrel has,..will have trouble stabilizing most anything over 52-53gr or 55gr max. The 1:12 or 1:10 or 1:9 1:8 1:7 barrels will handle the heavier pills. The 50gr choice is from an accuracy standpoint and not a speed standpoint (at least for me).

I have the same rifle as you do. I skim-coat glassbedded it and it helped alot. A very accurate (.5-.375-5shots) load for my gun is: 53gr. Sierra, 45grs. of IMR4350 for just over 3800fps. This is a stiff but safe load in my rifle. Pedro

I've shot out a couple of Swift barrels, normally if they won't shoot with 4064 or H414 they won't shoot. ror years my old standby load was 43.5 grains of H414 with a 55 Sierra flat base, goes 3800-3900 depending on the rifle. the other old tested load is 39 gr IMR 4064 with a 55 bullet for around 3800 fps. I've got a .220 AI it will group under 1/2 in. with from 44 to 47 grains of H414 and the 55 Sierra, shoots .3-.4 with occasional groups in the .2's with 47 grains which goes 4000 fps. In my experience, most of the Swifts shoot better the hotter they're loaded, within reason of course. Some friends have got good results with RL15, I've never used it, but it shoots well in any rifle I've ever tried it in from .30-30 to .375 H&H.

Good day all, I have just recieved my new 220 swift. It's a remington 700 synthetic stainless with a flutted barrel. I tried a few quiuck loads with some IMR 4320 just to try it. The gun felt comfortable but the loads sucked. Anyone out there have a 220 with some good loads. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for now Mike

I am loading the 50 gr Sierra Blitz King behind 40 grs of RL 15 with CCI Br primers. The velocity is just over 4000 fps. Work up with any load of course. My barrel is an old SS Winchester and the 55 gr BK may be too long for it as it does not shoot that well. The 50 gr load is good for a couple of shots under an inch at 200 yds. and sometimes better than that.

Try Varget as well as 4064. Make sure your OAL is optimum.

Mike, My Swift is very finicky too. Its a Ruger M77 with a 26" heavy barrel. The majic load for mine seems to be 36.5gr of IMR 4064 with just about any 55 grain bullet. The Hornady V-max moly seems to be its particular favorite. That load gets me about 3650 fps and is very mild for the Swift. I have loaded it up as far as 39gr, but the groups open up a bit. The only thing I don't like about my Swift is the fact that I never get to shoot it. My dad commandeered it for whacking coyotes in his buffalo pasture. In fact, he shot two with it yesterday. Cheers, Canuck
