Savage Scout 7.62x39
Just picked up a Savage Scout in 7.62x39 . I realize there will be cheap ammo out there mostly intended to spray through SKS's & AK's etc and some will be non-corrosive.I was hoping to load a few to see what I can do for accuracy. Does anyone have any recommendations on powders to use in a BOLT gun ? I intend to try 123 gr and would like to see what I can get out of 150 gr. Would like to hear what works in your bolt gun. Thanks

Never loaded for the 7.62x39 but I saw these just came out from Nosler on SPS.

Roger The rifle is being shipped so I have not measured the barrel but I believe it is 22 inches.

Far more important is what is the barrel groove diameter.

I'm going to correct myself. They have a 20 1/2 inch barrel and they have a 308 bore not 311.

You're doing it right and better if you can stand a little deeper throating. beerroger

It appears that AA 1680, 4198 and H335 all produce some good results . What has worked for others? The Savage action is certainly long enough to accommodate slightly longer COL. Not sure how long the throat is in these rifles and how far out I will be able to seat bullets.

I have been using H-322 in a wildcat based off that case.
Might be worth a look.

The little Savage finally arrived. I already like it and haven't even fired it yet. I like the detachable magazine. It is long enough to seat 130 and 150 gr bullets out far enough not to rob the modest case capacity. Mounted a 2 1/2-8 x scope and have some test loads using 110 and 130 gr hornady bullets and IMR 4198. Have some VV130 powder on order. From the data I've found it will deliver the highest velocities with 130 and 150 gr bullets. As soon as this rain lets up I'mheaded to the range

i believe the savage and rugers (m30 and 77) are all .308 barrels --- you'll errode the throat REALLY fast, and you could have a pressure excursion, should you shoot .311s in it ---

You are correct it is a 308 barrel. It will see nothing but 308 bullets from me.

Rain finally stopped & I made it to the range this morning. Had some test loads put together using 110 gr and 130 gr Hornady bullets and IMR 4198. The 110's grouped well but the 130's were grouping in about 3/4 inch @ 100 yds . Will play with the 130's some more and will try the 150's as well. This little gun is going to be a lot of fun.
