I have a bunch of CCI 200's ( STD large rifle ) left over, I know they are harder than pistol primmers but I shoot a TC so it hits hard, how much HOTTER if any is it to Mag pistol primmers ? I know they are a little taller also but they fit really well in the pockets.

If it were me I wouldn't even go there but if you are set on trying it I would contact CCI and talk to a tech. Find someone to trade with.

Smiler1 don't know about the 44 mag but I am presently working on a round for my .41 mag rifle using large rifle primers (Federal 210) and IMR-4064 powder. The slower burning powder with the longer barrel should give good preformance.

I put loaded some large rifle primers in some 44 mag loads for my pistol. the differants that I could see was that I would get light fireing pin hits on about 30 percent. I don't recommend it for that reason

Well I shoot a Thompson Contender so I will get full hits on them, I just thought the only dif of a large mag pistol VS a large std rife was the thickness of the cup and a very small higth dif?

I may not be correct about this but it is my understanding that the essential difference between rifle and pistol primer cups is the relative softness of the cup, pistols being the softer of the two due to less striker force. As a result they do not hold up as well to higher pressures. I seem to recall that the large rifle primer is stipulated for the .454 due to pressures in the 60kpsi range.

There is a dimensional difference between Large rifle and Large pistol primers - the large rifle primers are .009" taller, and so you often get a "high" primer that sticks out of the primer pocket instead of being slightly below flush. This can be dangerous - don't use large rifle primers in cases with large pistol sized pockets.

SmilerGot out the old digatal electronic caliper and checked a few primers for width from the face to the anvil side that rests against the primer pocket.
CCI 250 large rifle magnum 0.127
CCI 300 Large pistol 0.119
CCI 350 Large pistol mag 0.122
CCI 200 Large rifle 0.128
Winchester WLR O.131
Winchester WLP 0.118
Federal 210 large rifle 0.131
If you were using a CCI 350 Large pistol primer in your .44 and then used the CCI 200 standard rifle in it there would only be .006 difference in hieght.
When I went from the CCI 350 to the federal 210 I gained .009 and the primer was still below the case rim. I will have some test results soon.

My two cents. For what little bit of pistol and rifle reloading I have done for the 44 magnum, I find that the large pistol non-magnum primer work works best in both. If that primer is used there is no worry.

Its a good way to end up with half a case in your rifle chamber or revolver chamber..

I agree...use the correct primer for the job.

SmilerI wouldn't tell anyone to use a primer not specified for a certian case. But the fact is that different primers specified for the same case have different lengths. And I have found some interesting things about them tonight. I took a .41 magnum and loaded a federal 210 in it and placed a straight edge across the primer. A .007 feeler gage passed through the space betwen the primer and the straight edge with ease. A .010 would not go so there was about .008-.009 space between the primer and the straight edge. It was set that depth below the rim of the primer pocket. I took a CCI 200 and loaded it in another .41 mag case and it was flat with the straight edge even though it is .003 thousands thinner than the Fed 210. I loaded a CCI 200 in a .44 magnum case and it came out flat. The Fed 210 in the .44 magnum was the same as the .41 magnum. It was interesting that a thinner CCI set out flush. There are people who shoot the .41 mag rifle that use the Federal 210. But I would nix using the CCI 200 in either the .41 mag or the .44 mag. I use the winchester WLP and it is for both large pistol and magnum pistol and is the thinnest of all. But anyway, yes, use the right primer. But the Federal 210 large rifle primer does works well in the .41 mag rifle. Eeker
