It is a double decker, the top part is a flight pen and it will lift off and i can put just a regular pen roof on top. I only have fkhr quails now because i wasn't very successful at hatching them. Going to keep the four for eggs and when my new batch hatches, i'll have get a male for them. The rest i'm going to turn out and try to get them established.

Quails are tiny when they are hatched, and it still seems hese still haven't grown very much. but they are fully feathered. I read that quails have to be imprinted to their environment in their first week. So when the new hatch, i'm going to take their pen to the woods and let them imprint during the day and will go get them and bring them in for the first week.

I took out the temporary shelter, which was a cardboard box. They always liked to go in that cardboard box, but it wasn't enough to keep the rain off of them and this pen doesn't have a roof like the old one did. So i made them a little wooden house. They like that a lot and it's their favorite spot to rest. I thought they'd use the flight pen, but they don't, so i did all that for nothing. I put a tree branch in the top section, but they don't perch on it. I thought bobwhite quails like to fly. They fly to get away, but they must be ground dwelling and not stay in trees that much. Something like turkeys.

Penny, when we tried to raise a few Quail we were told to use a very low roofed pen as the Quail when spooked would explode into flight and scalp themselves on the wire at the top of the cage. We too were not successful at growing them from the egg. derf

Plinker,
I finally ended up using a recall pen or Johnny House. Yep, looks just like and outhouse with an inverted wire funnel for the returning quail to enter the pen. I have picture here if I can just find them. Anyway they work great for dog work or acclimating pen birds to the wilds. I usually start with two dozen 5 to 6 week old quail and release part of them daily. They will return usually by afternoon and as they become wild they will remain out until near dark and eventually stay out and not go back into the pen.

I modified the flight pen of the first version so it has 2 wire covered floors since they didn't use the flight pen and they don't require much headspace. Used some vinyl mobile home underpenning to make little enclosure they can hide in or use for shade or shelter. In winter, i'm figuring to put light bulbs in the enclosed area and keep them warm and keep their water from freezing. This will house about 4 or 5 bobwhites in each level...the ones i'm going to keep for breeding stock.

I wasn't successful in hatching eggs, either. Four of the first fifty eggs hatched and 16 of the second fifty hatched. Then ended up ordering fifty chicks that were on sale for 50 cents each.

Hoping to raise my own eggs that way don't have to wonder if they were bounced around in shipping.

Going to use the bottom half of the old pen for baby ducks.

Plinker, Check this Johnny House Site for some excellent information on raising and flight conditioning your quail.
Try an infra red lamp to keep your quail warm.

The 10 quails i kept for eggs are mature enough to distinguish male from female. There's 8 males and only 2 females.
