Nope was not me. I was there 70-71. If I needed it, I would suffer 7.62 raining down though I sure wouldn't look up!

You a Charlie, Delta, or Mike model Jock?

Best story I can tell is the day they (slicks)dumped us all out in one LZ and all of the teams just kinda melted into the edge of the LZ. They sent the slicks back for some reason ( we were monitoring both pushes). The slick orbited for a while caleed back asking where we were. We told TOC on the LZ.

Words of the lead slick,"If they are on the LZ they are the sneakiest bastards I have ever seen."

Found out he a had a pac to go with us so we told him it was secure and we got ort other guy!

Sneaky is what we got paid for! Big Grin

My most sastifying kill was a witnessed speckled-belly goose at 70-75 yards. I was shooting a 12g, 3" magnum Hevi-Shot 1.25 ounces of #4s. He was heading away, moving slightly left and upwards. I fired once, recovered from the recoil, and a couple of seconds later, the bird dropped. The dog stayed at my side and did not move until she saw the bird drop. Normally, I fire and bird drop and recoil happen about the same time, this was a notice-able delay. I have not tried this shot again!

A fun shot was vaporizing a sparrow at 35 yards I fired my 308, 150 grain Remington soft point, aiming at the bottom of the belly. I found a few down feathers and two little red dots. I was sighting in the rifle and knew it was 1/2 inch high at 50 yards.

I was 11F-40 back then. Best ride was single person insertion to meet up with the gang out of a crazy drivers OH-6. FUN TRIP TO THE LZ.

I started in the Guard as B model with SR22s, then some slick time (VIP) and then a gun bunny in Mikes.

Closed that time as an observer in OH6As.

Now I am a engineerng MOS but run ranges M-16, M-9, SAW and 240 Bravo qualification and construction/mantenance on a training site!

My best shot has to be while working with some folks last summer, first shot miss, no call, second shot high left, (with distances given) third shot left cheek just below eye . . . .
Kinda love what that SRH will do at 200 yards using 1X4 and 300 grain XTPs pushed by WC-820.

Most satisfying kill.....

This is my second and last cat story. I had
painted my restored 77 Corvette the day before.
Pulled it out of the garage and put it along side bewteen my house and my neighbors. Went in
an took care of nature. Came back to close the
garage door and glanced at the nicely painted Corvette and saw the neighbors cat on top of the
'vette. He glared out me when I shouted at him and proceeded to mark the top of the car at the juncture of the T-tops which don't seal perfectly. All I could think of was the scrathes on the roof and the hot piss leaking into the car on the new leather seats. I reached into the garage and got my compound box off the wall and nocked up a broadhead. Stepped
alongside the garage and yelled at the cat again. He didn't move! Released the arrow and
impaled the cat which slid down the windshield
onto the hood. Blood all the way down. Started
to head for the 'vette and I heard a gasp. Thought I had missed the cat when I caught sight of my neigbor and his wife standing by their barbeque. The wife was furious and was
starting to say something like "You bast..." when her husband turned to her and said "Shut up! It's a classic Corvette!

Humbly submitted,

Yes, and a classic tail too! Big Grin Loved the special effects BTW. Wink Do hope this isn't your last cat tail, for that would mean your end is near. Frowner I have found that as I age the tails just keep on coming. In other words, you never outlive your experience with tail. Or tails. Something like that. bewildered

Sorry about your 'vette, did you buy the husband a beer? Did you scatter the remains to the four winds? Confused DeTAILS man, DeTAILS! roflmao

Hmmm, I din't know that. bewildered I've been inverted many times in a LOH, and sometimes after a hard night at a bar somewhere... My EX always said I was weird, maybe she was on to something? Confused

Once me and another guy took about 30' off the top of a really big ass tree not far from Chu Lai... We had the technology! Damn LOH had a drafty feel after that, and a funny hop too. Frowner But you know what? The gomers stopped shooting at us so I figured it was a good move. I'll bet they were impressed with our bravery! Eeker Or astounded... One or the other. It's hard to face somebody that is fearless, or stupid. Or both. Big Grin

Chu Lai . . . You may be the OH-6 jockey that provided one of two enjoyable rides.
Duc Pho was our base on the coast, then we moved to BFE in the mountains. On the coast we were the last of the 23rd and then 173rd ABN below us!

Each AO had advntages/disadvantages.

TC, remember seeing some 173rd Patches but didn't stray out of the coop much down there. AO west of Tam Ky(forward), Hiep Duc' & neighboring communities. Easily located on a clear day by all the smoke. White for the hootches, grey for the HE, red for targets, black for burning LOH's. Went thru 8 the first two weeks I was there. We lived in tents in a dried up slough near the MAG 13 O'club, birds at the south end of Chu Lai East. Oh what fun... May-Aug '69

Ok this might not be my most satisfying kill but it was pretty damn funny I thought.

So I am driving on an old logging road to get to my deer stand. Doing no better than 5 miles an hour because of the rough conditions. So I am driving along minding my own business keeping an eye out for deer in the woods as I always do.

Much to my surprize there jumps out a 'possum 30 yards in front of my rapidly moving vehicle. Much to my amazement this possum decides that rather than flee the path of the vehicle it will fight!! now I am thinking boy is this think on some sort of drugs or what? So the possum raises up on its back feet and starts snarling like it is really going to do something. I just kept right on going and next thing you know this possum is biting the bottom side of my tire?
Wasn't hot, there were no shots fired but I had one flat possum and a story about my battle with a crazy critter.

Digital Dan,

To complete the 'vette cat story. When I saw
that I had the husband's support an evil urge
surfaced. I walked to the front of the 'vette
and picked the cat up by holding each end of
the arrow like it was as spit. I turned to the
couple and suggested they clear the burgers off
the grill and let me use the rotissorie. The
wife was then totally furious. I ended it by
asking if she had any Tabasco sauce to spice up
the cat. At this point there was steam coming
off her forehead. The husband realized the value of the moment and said "Yeh honey, got any
sauce?" She stormed away and the husband walked over an gave me a cold bottle of Guiness.
He laughed as I then headed to the trash can with the cat-on-a-stick.

Humbly re-submitted,

Old Elk Hunter

At age 16 I liked to shoot at almost anything to see the effect. I tried to suppress this urge while elk hunting near Dixie Butte in central Oregon. After many hours of tramping through the ravines so the old elk hunters would have something to shoot at after I spooked it I decided to head down the mountain back to camp. I was no longer interested in elk and just wanted to get down the steep grade that lead to Gulch Creek and camp. About halfway down the grade I saw an old snag down the hill. I was actually looking down at the top of it. Near the top was the remains of an old branch and I could see that there was a porcupine near the trunk of the snag. My urge to shoot was returning but I managed to suppress it until I got level with the branch.
I could then clearly see that it was not one, but a pair of procupines doing the breeding ritual very carefully. The males back was to me
as I reached into my pocket and got out a handloaded 130 grain Hornady hollowpoint that I had loaded for my 30-06 for coyotes. I slid that round home and flicked off the safety and
knew that my father would just think some hunter
took a shot at an elk. This fully released my
inhibitions about shooting at something other than an elk. The trigger broke cleanly on my old Winchester M70 as the bullet started to cover the 20 or so yards to the porqupines. I can only assume that the male thought for a brief millesecond that he was having the climax of his life.

Later in camp I savored the moment a few more times and decided that reloading my own ammo was worth the effort. I got an elk that year but I only remember the details of the amorous
porqupines.

Submitted for your consideration.

OEH, might I humbly submit that you apply for the position recently vacated by Ross at Handloader and Rifle? As good a tail as any he ever wrote, and not near as dark or introspective! thumb Little more work on similies and I'd recommend Double Gun Journal, keep the manuscripts comin'!

I'm looking for somebdy to fill Ross' shoes, not Venturino's pants BTW. A mountain of a man, not a celestial body as it were. Wink

digitalDan,

I am humbled by your praise. My goal is to share experiences that entertain. Some of my best memories when I was first allowed to go elk hunting with the "adults" were the tales told around the campfire. It was obvious that most were based on fact and spiced up with a little expansion of the facts. If the group would find value in it, I could spin some tales of pure fiction. The challenge would be to the reader to determine what was fact and what was fiction. Sort of like reading a Louis La'mour novel or books by Isaac Asimov.

Would have been great to have been there. I must admit the range changed in direct result to the amount of Red Lable left in the SMAJ and Gunny's bottles but the basic facts never changed.

South China Sea. Aircraft carrier and supply
ship have connected lines and hoses are in the
midst of stores transfer. Two miles ahead and
inline with the path of the carrier is a bunch of various size Junks. A destroyer is along
side them warning them to disperse. One of the
Junks waits until the last minute and suddenly
men come out of the living quarters on the Junk
and start waving guns. The destroyer breaks off
and does a 180 to port to get out of the path of the aircraft carrier which is now extremely close. The NV's suddenly realize what was being
shouted to them in English meant big boat coming, get the hell out of the way. Priceless to watch them freeze in fear as they get keel-hauled by an 1100 foot long ship.

Just FYI, the wake behing a carrier is mostly bubbles for about a 1/2 mile. People don't float in bubbles. Fewer NV, more shark food.
