I know a lot of people do it, but how illegal is it to use a cat as coyote/predator bait? If you guys do it, what method do you use? Do you just set it out in the cage and let it meow or do you tie it up to a tree or something? Please gimme the details. THanks

Max. We're not supposed to do it over 'ere, but if you leave one in a plastic bag (already dead by the way) for a few days to get a little ripe they make some of the best fox bait yet found. Dave. ....

Why didn't I think of that? How about hanging it from a low tree by one hind leg? It will make a lot of movements, meow a lot, and can easily be seen by approaching predators.

That's sorta like the hanging feather trick for bobcats...might do the trick now that I think of it. I do know that live crats will get a response from foxes and two were found dead at the head of my driveway a couple of years ago. Twin crats I think, throats ripped open and a puddle in the street. If you want to try the Crat-in-the-Breeze trick I suggest welding gloves while you're hanging them up though. They aren't very cooperative. Hello there Max M.. Welcome to the the world's finest repository of cat history, technology and practical information. Using a cat for bait is not really illegal under most circumstances. The illegal part come in only if you get caught in one of those leeberal places where the folk have lost their common sense. I don't use cats for bait myself but rather see them as useful for an end product: i.e., barbecue cat on those little bamboo skewers, useful work for the unemployed peta cat killers to do, active targets, etc.. The remains however, do work pretty good for crow bait, and you can have a lot of fun going the the local Ladies Cat Fancies Club meetings and putting the remains into a hubcap of one of the members. I like that one for summer time. Best wishes and goo dluck with crats.

I did not think a fox was big enough to kill a cat.

When trapping fox and coyotes here in Montana I catch field lions in sets.Dispatch the field lion.Remove from trap.Dug a "Big Hole set".Cut field lion in 1/2 and toss in the hole.Just a little shot of coyote urine on the set backing.Make sure your trap is bedded rock solid infront of the whole.1/2 cat while usually take 1 coyote or 3 to 4 red fox.
