Talked to a friend today, he is a pest controller for the local council and was called by a chap whose neighbour had died. The neighbour had had cats. Lots of cats. About 30 of them, the neighbours thought. They offered a decent reward for the cats disposal, and the sooner the better. Since yesterday, my friend have shot or trapped 27 cats around or under the house. There are many, many left but they are getting wary so he has to get more traps I guess. With the reward from the neighbours and the extra payment from the council it can almost finance a new gun...

Well now, seein' as the close combat is over it's time to break out the Sako TG something or other in .338 Lapua. Long range plinking is just as much fun even though it doesn't do much for the cardiovascular system. Wink That's why I took up jugglin' by the way. Big Grin

The worst thing is to be the neighbor of such a pervert and have to put up with the hordes of diseased felines, while carefully protecting your own.

The .338 Lapua is a great idea, but this guy is one of the few who have a police permit to shoot in built up areas, and he is pretty careful not to loose that permit... He has a Sako varmint i .243 Win, but even for that there is too many houses around... Frowner

Guess he have to stick to his Sako Quad with a 22 WM barrel and use some more stealth... thumb

Well ok Marterius, just a thought. An urban shooting permit is a novel idea! thumbGonna have to run that one by the county commission. Wink Maybe with the benefit of 20/40 hindsight I'd use those old .22 rf gallery loads made of pressed iron. They were sort of like the original safety slug and all.

I recommend a 12 gauge loaded with 1 1/2 oz of #2 lead shot. That should be good to at least 50 yards.

I was paid by a small city in Missouri to rid the town of its felion over population. Yes I was given an hourly wage. I used a CCI CBs and a Kimber 82 with a Leupold. I reduced the population by 105, and that worked for "The Boss" (he was elected)

Dang, how many fur coats could you make with 105 crat skins? Probably enough to make the PETA perverts go nuts (or should I say nuttier?).

In Sweden, every local council select a couple of hunters to shoot pigeons, jackdaws, crows and - if need arise - crats. They are given a police permit to shoot in urban areas. Most of the jobs are done with a 22LR with a silencer (and you need one of these police permits to get a license for a silencer for a 22LR). The method of payment varies, some are paid by the hour, and some get an annual sum. Some get extra for petrol or ammo.

Sometimes the hunters are very experienced and well respected; sometimes they are a friend of the Mayor... I think the usual way of recruiting them is by recommendation from other council hunters. After all, you want to be pretty careful with whom you go out shooting pigeons in a park if watched by a lady from the local PETA... Roll Eyes

Most of the bird-shooting is usually done on the council's dumps and waste-plants but most of the shooting is up to the hunters themselves. Crat jobs are by prior arrangement only, usually after some cat-pervert had died and the neighbourhood is full of the little buggers. Another friend with such a permit, here in Goteborg, had a rather odd job - feral rabbits. Family bunnies escaped during the years until a large area close to the harbour was full of holes. It was all very cute until they started digging under some large oil-cisterns. Eeker

Regards,
Martin

Sounds like you Swede's have a very practical way of handling such problems. Too bad that sort of common sense can't take hold over here!
