Shootin geese with centerfires and seagulls is common in Iceland. I myself have taken it further and shoot ptarmigan and all kinds of vermin birds like ravens, seagulls and others with rimfires. At first because I didnt have a shotgun but now about fiftie guns later I do it for fun. This on I shot flying (luck of course) with a .243 win.

Once I shot a crow that was sitting on a high tension lead with a 270WIN out of an upstairs window of my friends house. I was 16 or so and it was the stupidist shot I can remember ever taking. Stupid because I was shooting towards town and if I had missed the bullet would have maybe hit someone. Tells you how stupid a couple of teenaged boys can get. I KNEW I couldn't miss, right? It was a cool shot though. The bird just went "POOOOF" Don't try this at home... [/QUOTE] if you think that a bird altered the 270 bullet enough that it wouldnt STILL kill someone then your still stupid. a 270 thru a bird so fast that is gonna be almost unaffected and very very lethal. I have shot quite a few birds with all manner of rifle through the years. WE never considered it stupid-we were just making meat. We always went for head shots whether shooting a .22lr or a centerfire. My "best" shot ever-while working as a logger I arrived at the jobsite before the rest of the crew one morning. As soon as I got out of the pick up I spotted a ruffed grouse standing on top a log. I pulled out my '06 and took aim. The bird was broadside to me at only about 15 yards but he was bobbing his head back and forth, back and forth. I tried to time the shot and fired. The bird went down in a flutter as they do. When I picked him up I was surprised my 180 grain bullet had only removed his beak. Must have been enough shock to knock him silly however. Of course, I told the guys on the crew that I always shoot 'em that way-so there's no fear of wrecking any meat!

im astounded that none of you have jumped on this shit. what a waste. why not just shoot paper. what pleasure do you get from killing an animal just to see it die? its not a varmint or a feral animal and you sure arent leaving enough meat to feed a mouse. so why kill them?

K Stpehens, I believe you're trying to stir us up or you actually believe this stuff. REad my previous post carefully, please. You'll notice I said we shot for meat and we went for head shots only. We even practiced for those shots with empty shotgun shells. I don't remember ever, even in my over exuberant youth, that I shot any cirtter just for fun or just to see it "puff". If anybody in my logging/farming commumity had blasted birds as depicted in your photos that person would have been ostracized from our society. Today, whoever did such a thing would prosecuted by law. My opinion only: this was a bad joke in the worst taste or you are a flaming liberal trying to snuggle up to Hillary. Speaking of which: do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Answer: Because Janet Reno is her father!

Al Agurkis i dont give a shit what you do. i quoted someone who said they shot a bird off a powerline with a 270. thats fucking stupid. second i didnt post those pics of turkey blown to shit. i reposted them. thats fucking ignorant, wastefull and GD disrepectfull. i didnt say anything about you beak shooting heroics. im talking about the turd Flippy who said... #1 "Once I shot a crow that was sitting on a high tension lead with a 270WIN out of an upstairs window of my friends house" and the other one, RUNAS who obliterated those turkeys with his Tikka. maybe you should put your glasses on and see who posted what before you start harrasing me. are you supporting thier actions? shooting high powered rifles up into the air at birds sitting on powerlines? fuck the people who might lose thier power or the poor dumb kid 2 miles away who catches a 270 in his head on the school yard. Do you support wanton waste of game animals. is this meat hunting to you? then this AHole says... Goog target practice for Africa!!!

KStephens. Turkeys in NZ are considered a pest, personally I dont consider this a waste, tell your sobb story to ANY NZ FARMER and see what reaction you would get!! Also I suggest you should go sell this shit the your peddling to the producers of any Varmiting video, they blow shit up for fun too!!! and people buy it. Pest control is for us here in NZ is a must!! weather it's rats, mice, possoms, rabbits, hares, wallabies, feral cats, turkeys, magpies, myna birds, stoats, deer, whatever there are no natural predators here to control these animals, except for human, because they were all introduced. Our ecology here is too delicate to let these PEST get out of control so, the more control we do as a country, the better off our country will be. As for the turkeys, they didnt feel much 300 grs of 375 made sure of that!! but go find a video filmed in NZ by the "Graff Brothers" about the use of 1080 poison in NZ for "Possom Control" watch that, THEN come and tell me what Ive done is wasteful. PS would you like to come round for dinner, Ive got some turkey'S in the freezer,so has my neigbours, friends, fellow workers. While your there you can KISS MY ASS!! In Nordic countries its very common form of hunting to shoot grouse etc. eatable forest birds in trees with rifles. Its usually before sun rise when you go to forest and find a spot where you have a clear look at a clearing. Just before sun rise the birds arrive. Then, if you are decent shot you might have a chance to get 1 or 2 of them before they flee. Calibers of .22x to .30 are usually used and with FMJ bullets. This way there is little damage to meat. Only 15-30min after sun rise the oppoturnity is gone for the day. After that you can get them by stalking them in dense forest with a shotgun. Here is what it looks like if you are lucky (they are tetrao tetrix ie. black grouse): Note: Photo is not taken by me but by an unknown countryman of mine.

Did you actually READ my post? Town was way over a mile away, and did I mention IT WAS THE STUPIDEST SHOT I CAN EVER REMEMBER TAKING? Oh, that's right! I did! Did I mention I was 16 or so? Oh, that's right! I did! KSTEPHENS, do you bother to read any of these posts? By your typing and spelling skills (skills?), I am wondering IF YOU CAN READ. KSTEPHENS, you didn’t happen to be a poor dumb kid out on a school playground near Springfield, Oregon say in the spring of 1976? Catching a 270 bullet in the head MIGHT explain your demeanor… I never said I shot up into the air, you did. I was shooting level with the powerline out of an upstairs window of my friends house and town was past several timber laden hills way over a mile away. Where you there? And I didn’t even have to use the word FUCK. Sorry KSTEPHENS, you might not understand what I am saying if I don't use the word FUCK. WOW! No matter how long I live, there will ALWAYS be someone vying for position at the head of the dumbass line. Amazing.

When I was younger, I shot crows and seagulls at my friends farm with my .300 Winchester Magnum. All I could afford was "bargain bin" 150gr. ammo, so I bought 4 boxes, but then realized I didn't have any money for targets. I blew off 3 boxes of lead nailing birds at various ranges before deer season opener to get some experience shooting that beast. Now I'm old and mature and realize that it was not the most responsible thing to do, but a bunch of families in the area had plenty of deer meat in their freezers because of a few dozen dead birds. Bullets moving that fast practically vaporise them, however! ________ "...And on the 8th day, God created beer so those crazy Canadians wouldn't take over the world..."

Growing up in Iowa, crows and starlings had bounties on them (as did fox). The crows would follow the farmer's corn planter, digging up and eating the freshly planted seed. At 11 years of age, I had my own .22LR rifle, at 14, I had a .222 Mag, and at 16 I owned a .220 Swift. All were used to shoot the above critters. Shoot totals: starlings = thousands crows = hundreds fox = dozens. My best shot was when I visited my friend on an adjoining farm, showing off my new Mod 70, .220 Swift with K8 scope. I had yet to reload any ammo, and was shooting factory cartridges. I was explaining how fast the Swift was, and would slay any varmint, when my friend said, "If that rifle is that good, shoot that crow." The "crow" was in a tree at the end of the 1/4 mile fence row we were standing near. I laid the rifle over a tractor tire, held about 6 inches over the crows head and about 1 foot into the wind, and toughed it off. The crow exploded, with feathers drifting in the wind for about 30 seconds. My friend never berated my rifle nor my ability after that. And I never told him that I made the luckiest shot of my entire life. WYLD

RUNAS, I have a NZ ? for you about feral cats. If I remember correctly, one of the islands (I don't remember if it is the North or south or maybe one of the smaller ones) was planning to kill off all the feral cats by introducing several diseases all at once and prohibit importation of new cats while also requiring all family pets to be sterilized. Did this work? Or am I way off base and have some facts crossed up? Back on Topic.......here in Ak ptarmigan are harvested quite often using 22 rimfires, especially in the winter(season runs 10 aug to April 30). I have used my 17hmr....if they are close, head shots only, out past 100 or so and body shots don't blow them up at all.

Hi i have hunted birds with rifles for more than 50 years. first hunting pigeons with air gun, then nearely all kind of birds with rifle. partridges, ducks, gees, you name it. i believe hunting birds with rifle is more human than hunting them with shotguns. i have used 22lr for smaller ones and 22 mag and 222 rem for larger birds like gees. it is more fun and more human . i turned from shotguning as a kid when i found more than dosen of blind and wounded ducks around the nearby lake only after a week end hunting by guest hunters. regards yes Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

akperrydog, Feral cats here are a problem but as for some of the things you brought up err..DUNNNO. I do know that our Department of Conservation do take measures to eradicate feral cats, rats, stoats and possoms off some of the smaller islands off our coastlines to protect our native birds, some of which are endangered. But as for nutering of domestic cats IMO it should be done anyway(unless they are for pedigree bloodlines and these should be in controlled situations) For any more info gooogle "feral cats NZ" and you will get plenty of hits. Just keeping on the subject on hand though!!! More turkeys on the weekend this time with my new 300 WSM @ 450 yrd!!! Sorry guys not photos this time,Im sure some people will still be picking up their toys after the last lot so I sure would hate to do that again Regards RUNAS War is inevitable, if idiots are in charge of countries
