Hey there all,
I used to hunt squirrels a lot as a kid but alas my wife is too grossed out to eat them. Therefore, I gave up hunting them as I don't want to kill them just for the heck of it. They were very plentiful in Kansas where I grew up and were my favorite game animal.

Anyway,
I am an avid fly tier and have a dozen or so acid dye colors that I use for tying. I'd like to dye 4-5 squirrel tails of each color as it is a bit of a pain to do. I don't expect to be able to get them all from one person but could use whatever you'd be willing to share. If you hunt squirrels and don't use the tails, I'd like to have them.

I can use grey, black, white or red. I can tie up some flies for you if you'd like and pay the shipping.

Thanks!!

Mepps fishing lure company buys them, They mention the best methods for taking care of and shipping them. It says that it is illegal to sell squirrel tails in, (from) Oregon, so I guess I can't sell them, no problem since I want them... (buy them? I'd assume it's OK as they are sold in fly shops) but I would still like to have a big batch for dying. Thanks for any help you can give.

Trez, have you any tails on the way? I keep them for my own use and am about certain I have some to spare if you don't have any on the way. Mine are all gray squirrels, a red is pretty rare on my property.

Trez I'll keep you in mind. I've got some squirrel tails as well as whitetail deer, pheasant, and turkey feathers too.

Someone gave me a fly tying kit last year so I've started saving stuff for it. I'm just messing around making flies and jigs for panfish, having fun.

Thanks Evan,
I do a lot of tying so if you are in need of anything or have questions feel free to ask. I could most likely help, send you something you need or point you in the right direction.

A couple is better than none, right?

Curious, how many flies do you think one tail could produce?

I'm sure there are a couple dozen flies to be had with each. It depends on if your tying large streamers or tying a wing on a small wet fly. If I wasn't dying them a dozen different colors, I
wouldn't want so many.

I'm getting some from several different people thought so your right, even a couple are helpful.

Nice looking dog!

Sounds like you are good on tree rats. If you are serious about tying browse through www.hideandfur.com sometime. Sometimes they have the unusual like caribou leg skins, always something interesting and are good folks to do business with.
