ShootnNut, welcome aboard! I'm glad to hear from you and especially in regards to the .17HMR. First day I heard about the cartridge I said to Mrs. Dan, 'Whutinell's this'n fer?'. She was disposed to think that perhaps it was to help employment numbers in the midwest so as to boost Bushie's chances for re-election. I told her that Repubs weren't that sly and all... Anyway, so now I know. Crat Control! Once again I can catch a full 8 hours without tossing and turning.
Ive been to a lot of hunting and gun forums in my day but never seen any thing like this. All though I have to say I would probly fit in here pretty well. I have always considered any carnivorous domesticated feline to be a dangerous predator in need of extermination. I had one a couple weeks ago, about a 30lb'er, that turned my garbage can over and spread trash over half my yard. I was trying to keep from disturbing my neighbor, CB Long to the chest area. It ran off, but not untill after jumping three feet in the air. Two days later he was back. I wasnt so nice this time, CCI Stinger. After watching him flop and jump for ten seconds he laid lifeless, so I thought. I went outside to remove the carcus from the backyard and he was gone. Yesterday morning I was drinking my coffee and my wife says lord look at the size of that thing, he was back again. I guess that Stinger got number eight because the 17HMR got number nine. Head shot 25yrds, 17HMR V-MAX, no more head, no more lives.

Thanx for the welcome, Ive been playing exterminater on these varmints for years. I just never said to much about it, didnt want to offend anyone. After seeing how well this 17HMR works Ive come to the conclusion it was made just for tabby termination. Good hunting and watch your back, these critters are sly!

I went to the range Friday to check the scope on my deer rifle, season opened this weekend. Not a sole at the range, had it all to myself. Laid my gun case on the bench and looked down range just in time to see this critter cruising for mice about the 300yrd line. I thought it was pretty nice of someone to leave that target down there for me (kept me from walking 300yrds to hang one). I stuck one in the old .308 laid her on the bench and popped a cap. You wouldnt beleive what a ballistic tip .308 will do to a 20lb critter at 300yrds. Hey one shot and I knew my scope was still on and never had to hang a target!

ShootnNut, Welcome to our little patch of heaven. I echo 120's remark that when dealing with lawn lions, "there's no such thing as too much gun." And, actually, many of us here would believe what a mess a .308 ballistic tip does to a crat at 300 yds. Red mist is a satisfying concept, and often discussed around here. However, perhaps you should have taken that 300 yard stroll so you could enlighten us all as to what the offending crat's last meal was! Just for the sake of posterity, yeah, that's it, posterity.

What part of the unCommonwealth you from? Years ago, before that other varmint (people) got so damned thick here in Greenup county, I used to run Cat Patrol up and down the local hollows, doing my part to help Mother Nature be rid of the Feline menace. I used a 22-250 and it seemed to be just the ticket. Once upon a time, far, far away and long ago, I had this damned cat get under my house. I was laying in bed and kept hearing this , meow, meow, meow. I asked the wife if that was part of her anatomy calling to me, she said no, that pussy was under the house. I went to sleep and hoped the cat would be gone come morning. But no, it was still there. No amount of calling, tossed rocks or anything else would extract kitty. So, out cam the rifle and a well placed Stinger made kitty flip and flop, cry and whine, scratch and moan and the little SOB crawled WAY back under the house and then of course, croaked. Thank god, the village idiot came along and the offer of two dollars got him to crawl under there and fetch the corpse. That ended my use of a 22 rimfire on all cats.
