Feral cat - Plague

Here's an interesting article about some feral cats found dead in Kern County California. We've had ground squirrels test positive for Bubonic and Pnuemonic plague but this is the first time for cats. One more good reason to kill feral cats.

Health officials are not taking any chances after 40 cats were found dead at a home in Hart Flat. There are about 50 surviving cats, two dogs and several horses on the property.

But recently they noticed dozens of the cats were dying, and called Animal Control. Officials quarantined the area, and passed out flyers warning neighbors of the Plague, which is found in Kern County mountain areas. It is transmitted by bites of fleas infected with a pathogenic bacteria. Cats are very susceptible to the Plague, which can kill them in just two days. Plague, also known as Black Death, can be easily transmitted to humans; it killed about a third of Europe's population in the Middle Ages. Now it can be treated successfully with antibiotics if caught early.

On Monday, several Kern County agencies returned to the home to test the animals for various diseases, including the Plague.

"There could be diseases infectious only to cats and they're spreading it amongst each other and dying. Or it could be a public health issue and the cats could have something that can be passed on to humans," Kern County Animal Control Division Chief Denise Haynes said.

Haynes confirmed that a cat belonging to someone else about a half-mile away recently tested positive for Plague.

People living in the local mountains are urged to rid their pets of fleas.

maybe we should breed them and sell them. maybe by the oz. or lb. depending on the number of cats you want to infect.

Figures, Kern county............first charlie manson and squeaky, now bubonic plague ridden cats. But the notable thing is the imense Kern county response to a few dozen dead cats in a remote area and the non reaction to tens of thousands of illegals carrying drug resistant TB to all aspects of the population. I wonder how many maids and food workers are tested after arrival there from Chiapas?

Got your PM, The cats were found Monday the August 22nd. The dead cat found a mile away that tested positive for plague was found about 6 weeks ago.

Jeez, a little bubonic plague and everyone gets in a tizzy. I know that it's directly transferrable to humans but we've only had one person die from it in the last 2-3 years.

Send 'em all up to Sacramento. They need some real issues to deal with, and maybe some new blood.

They just announced on the news tonight that there are four confirmed cases of Bubonic plague in cats this year, 3 in Kern County and 1 in Placer county.

The lab results from the 40 dead cats found this week are still pending.

Well the lab results are back and it's not plague. I guess 40 dead cats is just good luck!
