I resolved that in favor of .22 mag for myself, Cz not much more than a Marlin's cost. Got three squirrels today with it. I want the throw weight and energy levels of the mag.

Well, i went to the gun store (read: Wal-Mart). When i got there i checked on all sorts of guns ruger 10/22s and a real nice henry golden boy in .22lr. But when i saw the bull barrled marlin bolt in .17hmr it was all over. when i got it home i sighted in and it was love at first shot. so now i have no excuse for not shooting lap lions at great distances. Oh well i hope it is as good as everyone says it is. Im using 17grn federal v-max. How explosive are those bullets? What devastation would they deliver to a small game animal?

They pretty much deposit every last foot-pound in an inch or so. The speer hollow points penetrate more. Small stuff, like blackbirds, usually are left in shreds. Bigger stuff like rabbits, are dead without a twitch. Only crat I shot with mine was a head shot so I don't know how well it will put them down. Only down side in my opinion is ammo cost.

I've watched with some amusement the growing plethora of USUSBs(Ultra Short Ultra Small Bores)...first it was the .17s, then the .14s, 19s and to leave no niche unfilled, the .20s, latest small bore rage of the moment. Even saw a wildcat .10 bore based on a necked down .22 LR case...Been my observation that one can clean a .416 Rigby with a .22 cal cleaning rod if the need arises, but you can't clean a .17 USUSB with same. Thus, while justifying a new gun is easy, the supplies to care for the little bitch is too much of a stretch for my harried mind. Anyway, I've several rifles that can tap a chuck or prairie poodle well beyond 300 yards, or even a crat at 400...even with a bit of breeze, the USUSBs don't or can't, and I can still cut a yote in half at close range, damn near anyhoo...USUSBs can't do that either. Also, not owning a USUSB allows you to create run on sentences without fear of the grammar nazis...a beast noted for having a USUSB brain.
