Hi guys,

Just wondering how rare these things are. Last year while deer hunting with my bow out of my tree stand the largest pack of coyotes I ever saw came by me. I live in eastern Mass. close to the RI. border. I hunt the swamps behind my house and the woods here are very thick so by the time they "filtered" through the small pines infront of me they were in bow range. I guestemated 10 to 14 of them spred out about 40 feet wide. Of these 2 looked "blond" in color. Definitly coyotes but golden retreiver in color. As luck would have it one of them stoped right infront of me at about 10 yrds. and I drove and arrow right down the top of it. It spun around in circles then hobbeled off. Other coyotes came over to it and kind were trying to flip it over to see what was wrong. It wasnt dead, just wounded. A few minutes later it moved out to about 60 yds. from me and went behind a downed tree where I lost sight of it. I kept my eyes on the area and about 5 Min. later saw the rest of the coyotes filter off the same way they came in. I saw the other blond one leave but not the one I shot. I waited at least an hour if not two before getting out of the tree to make sure it had bleed to death. I snuck out of the woods the back way then ran home and grabed my shot gun just incase it was alive still and tried to run. I came back expecting to find my beautiful trophy but found just found pools of blood. I dont know if I opened up its stomach with the arrow or it was pucking blood but there were pools of blood with what looked like deer parts mixed in. There was enough blood to keep a cow alive but no coyote. :-[ I searched the swamps for the whole day and couldn't find blood leaving the area or my coyote. Bummed me out big time. About two weeks later I was sitting against a big pine tree with my son and a muzzle loader watching over a path hopeing a doe would walk by for my son to take, when sure enough here comes a pack of coyote up the path. A big gray one looked right at us and I shot at it but missed. Don't ask me how. They took off down a hill to our right and of course there was the other blond coyote. Didn't see him when I shot. I was out of ammo.... We only had the muzzle loader at the time. I saw one good pack this year while in my tree during deer deason but no blond.

Two weeks ago at dawn I was out checking my traps that I've been recently setting witch I can't seem to get a coyote in. It was raining and windy. As I came up on one set of traps there was a blond coyote takeing off. I had my M1 carbine but no shot and it was gone in a flash. The only reason I saw him at all is because of the light color. Makes me wonder if I was 5 min. later if he would have been in the trap, he was only 15' from it. I MUST GET HIM!!! Hope I didn't bore you all with my story but have any of you seen one of these blond coyotes? Anybody have a picture of one? How rare are they?

I'm gonna have to get in my tree and try calling for them. The 1st one I shot [and only one recovered] I did it useing a wounded rabbit call but I was hunting specifically for coyote at the time and the past few times I called I've had no luck. That one was a plain jane gray coyote but he does look good on the wall. :-]

Neal,

You might do better in the Varmint Hunting or the Fur and Trapping forums here. I don't think they are common, but also not rare. I've seen pics of everything from almost pure black to albinos, but the unique colored ones are certainly neat to look at.

Here's a link to one I shot and later got mounted - did the one you shot look similar to this?

erict's red coyote

Yes erict that is it exactly!!! That is the prettyest one I've ever seen. Thanks for posting the pics. I've got to put some time in this week and get him before the weather gets any warmer and he starts to shed. What a nice mount that must be. I had the gray one I shot made into a rug that hangs on the wall with my flying turkey. I had my coyote done at Powers Taxidermy in NY.

here in southeastern NY, Orange County, I know of three packs which are very light in color, almost totally grey on the outside, they are also larger than average. Obviously they share a common ancestor, the two packs I am familiar with right across the Hudson river (Putnam & Westchester) from these three packs are normal coloration and smaller.

Not uncommon at all, has to do with diet and weather conditions and it is also genetics at work...I have seen them from Albino to almost black or dark brown but seldom will you see one that is just one color.
