Finally got one to act right. Got lucky and spotted him Friday afternoon late, (played hooky from work all afternoon, but was for a good cause). Watched him fly up, was on the fence line way before daylight. Owl hooted just before sun up, and he blasted off from the roost. I got all shook up, but the best was yet to come. He hit the ground about 100 yards away with a hen, so I called a few times quite like. The hen came on down the fence line with the tom in tow. He spotted my jake decoy, and came over to chastise it for being in his field. He popped the deke, and knocked it over, I wated till he was looking away and raised my shotgun, when to my vast surprise, the back sight was gone, (must have pulled off taking it out of the 4-wheeler scabbard). Oh s***, now what. I figured I could interpolate how to hold at 40 yards, and when he started acting nervous about the decoy that laid down and did not get up, I figured now or never. Sent the Heavyshot 10 gauge load on it's way, and he hit the ground. Bo-yah!

Nice work! beer
Our season in Idaho opened Friday, we had 5 or 6 toms gobblin' all around us and the one that came in I shot at about 35 yards, I failed to hold high enough and after being knocked over with the blast to his chest he flew off! Tough birds, we're at it again tomorrow 4 AM....

Mr. Sherlock,
Shade under twenty one pounds, 8" beard, 1 1/8" spurs. I had taken a few birds out in Texas with a rifle in my misspent youth, but this was the first one to call in.

Will be over your way again next week, got a meeting with the boys in New Bern. Delta just started a flight into Kinston, so that will cut a few hours off the drive in from Raleigh. When does the good off shore fishing start up? One of the guys told me I could hook up a charter down in Morehead City, any suggestions?

Worriedman,

I've printed off your posting and will give it to my friends who developed Hevishot or whatever its properly called. I don't think they initially were thinking of it being used for turkeys.

RELOAD - ITS FUN!

I try to get down there once a year.
I get fishing emails from a guy over in Swansboro.
I'll post it here and in the fishing forum.

Hello Worriedman. I can't tell you much about fishing there as I surf fished the Outer bankS from Duck in the north to Drum inlet in the south. I'll bet though that you could check the yellow pages and little tourist papers, then go to the marinas and really start asking around to get a sense of what is going on now. Good luck!

Worriedman, good on ya! Nice gobbler, and it will probably taste better since you played hooky to bag it. thumb

BTW, not a one of my shotguns came from the factory with a rear sight. Did I get shortchanged?

Don't think so DD. I had mounted a set of front and rear fiber optic sights on the old 10 gauge, then patterned it off the bench (what fun that was!)to get windage and elevation right. Use a Pattermaster choke tube, it throws a really nice tight pattern with the Hevishot, shoots more like a rifle under 30 yrds than a shotgun, so I wanted to be sure I was pointing it right. I talked with Tru Glo, the nice young lady is sending me anotherback sight, guess I should use some loc tite this time???

Ought to be a real crat flattner, number 6 shot, 2.5 oz., 3.5 in. mag., turn em inside out I bet!

Dan, I know of which worriedman speaks.

Some men that come out to the range bear these strange arms.Seems they also sight in ,,,ready,,,,'Shotguns'.I too was and still am,enthralled.

What crat blasters? Eeker

These dudes are very very serious about the shotguns they lay Turkeys down with.Big ole shells too.10 gauge mags look like salt shakers. Some work up reloads that shoot in their guns much like us 'twist tubers' do.

They were shooting at targets w/ turkeys pictured on em.They were trying to obliterate the heads.

I shot two of their targets on center with a friends .480 Ruger.
They were laughing about not much left to brag about.

I told em I didn't see anything in the rule book about pickin' em up. Smiler

If ya take a gobbler to the taxidermist without a head, do they have spares? Confused

I was being facietious about the sights guys, I know all about shotrifles. I prefer to get closer and do it the old way, no bad vibes from me if you do it your way. I'm certain the best calling for such a gun is CatSplatting though. Wink

I have a bad habit of picking my head up off the stock to see the sights better, (old eyes are not what they used to be). Have found that the rifle type sights help keep me lined up better. And, with the pattern that the Rem. churns out with the new choke tube and the hevishot, a fellow could miss at close range. Inside 25 yards, the dern thing shoots like a rifle. Now I am looking for a 10 gauge reloader, figure home rolled #4 buck ought to be just the ticket for coyotes and crats!
