Was reading on another shooters' forum and the discussion came around to our favorite targets--here is how one poster said he favored taking care of them:

"Our standard procedure for feral cats and dogs here is "3S". Shoot, Shovel and Shut up."

Now the shovel has two, maybe three purposes. 1. To actually handle the filthy things. 2. To dig and later fill in the hole, and 3. To do the nasty little buggers in.

Some people are a lot like Slinkies: They're not good for much but it's kind of fun to push them down a flight of stairs.

The three "S" mode is only appropriate in certain limited circumstances. Sometimes it is better to leave the carcass where it fell. Once I told a fellow "Chupacabra got it amigo, better be careful around here." Another time I just gave the neighbor the collar from "patches". "Just found this near that rottie guys yard." Since some of these people inflict their crats on us they need to participate in the problem resolution even after the fact. Just like you tell the right words to the guy holding the leash on the dog taking a dump at the edge of your driveway.

That's an excellent option, IF you have a dog in the vicinity that would actually consume them. A variation on that is to toss the collar in the dog's lot, keep quiet, and let everyone draw their own conclusions.
The problem is that the catwhores run right out and replace fluffy. I prefer to 3S them, then enjoy the brief respite while the twits wait in vain for their vermin to return.
