Well, I finally got my 458 Winnie shooting great. 3/4 inch 115 yard 3 shot groups. I'm using 300 gr hollow points at I guess around 2700 fps. I decided to use this gun on a cull hunt in Alabama for some up close does. None of the little ladies showed up and that left my trigger finger itchy. So my buddy and I decided to visit the local dead pit to look for some yotes when lo and behold we see a cat stealthed out waiting for scavenger birds or whatever the damn things do. I laid down on the ground which put me eye level with the crouched prarie panther and put the x hairs just under his chin. The instant I touched off that 458 my buddy let out a hell of a scream. I didn't see much for a second or two because nowhere, and I repeat NOWHERE have I seen written not to shoot a 458 from the prone position, (especially when it only weighs 7 1/2 lbs.) I thought some PETA bastard had kicked me in the nose and couldn't see a damn thing through all the tears, (forgot to NOT wrap the thumb). As I rolled around in agony, the sound of laughter filled the air. My friend told me that the offending feline literally flipped up ten feet and back twenty from where it was. When we got to where it was there was no cat, just some fur tufts and a fine red mist covering the weeds. We made our way to where the tangled mess was currently resting and about came unglued. POST MORTEM, everything from the nose down and straight through to the rectum, or should I say wrecked'em was gone. Ribs, jaw, leg bones, hips, and interesting enough the tail was still attached. Imagine a lion skin rug minus the felt and jaws. Weirdly there was not one piece of meat between where I hit him to where we found him.
Now if I could only figure out how to field dress a deer in one shot I would be doing something.

Hi Carn, jolly good shot ole boy.
Only in America will ya find Gentlemen shouldering howitzers to vaporize 12 pound dump cats.Although 300 grainers are a bit on the light side.Studies show 500 grain Tungsten Sledgehammers are the norm on these hard targets.
Sorry about the prone 'What was I thinking?' accident. I've been there.
One time I talked a Compadre' of mine to fire his Model 37A 3" 12 straight up.Now he has that sideways swagger that John Wayne made famous. He still has not talked to me to this day.(Sissy)
I wish your friend had videoed the moment of impact,it would be interesting in slow motion playback.
And filming the impact on the crat would be funny too. Smiler

Field shooting is certainly different than working up a load, and often made very difficult by the chance of a charge or a getaway. But you just get better as you work through all the possibilities of CAT CONTROL WORK, and render valuable service to the community. Have you tried the Horny Day Super Explosive 560 grain Magnesium Jacketed Cat Destructo bullets designed for the .45-70? They are on fire when they get there. Impact lets the vaporized material inside saturate the target and light up off the magnesium. I think Dan might be using some 50's in his 50 KatzenBlaster. ned

Gentlemen, I didn't intend to vaporize the beast, that part was just a bonus. The mental picture of the situation that lets me fall asleep with a smile on my face is that wonderful soul lifting scene from Boondock Saints. That moment is legendary...........
The whole magnesium Kat Kruncher gig sounds neat, don't leave me out in the cold when it is perfected. Is it similar to the BB and primer in the hollow point trick?

I got a 30-338 Weatherby in trade that I did not
really want and saw no use for until my neighbor
stopped by and asked if I would clear out some tom cats that were trying to breed his purbred cat that he had locked in the barn. Dug around in my bullet supply and found some 110 grain half jacket open hollow points. Loaded up 20 of those in the brass that came with the gun. Had to reduce the load a bit because they were vaporizing about ten feet from the muzzle and wouldn't register on my cronograph. They do hold together for awhile at 4400 fps.

Set up by the neighbors barn and waited for the tom cats to show up. They actually were getting in a line to wait their chance to breed.
Beautiful sight, four tom cats lined up about a foot apart going away from the barn back toward the woods. I had a hard time lining up the shot because I was laughing too hard at the expected consequences. My neighbor was croched
behind me to watch. Let the shot go and my neighbor had to leave to puke as it was such an effective shot. He had a hard time explaining to his wife why part of the barn was pink. He
promised to paint it when the rain stopped.

After that I went to the Goodwill store and bought several used stuffed animal toys that
looked like typical cats. They work great for
visual decoys when you are calling cats near town. The coyotes know a good meal when they see one.

Please clarify this for me. I want to be sure I have the picture right. These 4 cats were standing such that you could draw a straight line from the scope, into the first one's chest and out the last one's anus?

This is how I'm reading your post and I hope to God it's correct. Talk about once-in-a-lifetime.

I find the .45-70 with a 300gn slug works just fine on cats.I figure since they can sratch& bite they come under the heading of dangers game (thin skined of course)& and we all know (or should!) that you can never use enough gun for that situation( unless your name is WDM BELL) as for the 'prone incident!'.Think of it as a right of passage into the world of Big bores Big Grin

For GONZO FREAKPOWER,

Yep, they were pretty well lined up. I had to
jockey around a bit to get a bullet path through all of them. Some were sitting on their
hauches, one was almost laying down. They weren't being totally cooperative.

My wife had a female cat that came of age. It wasn't too long before the males were fighting for breeding rights. After a couple of days they quit fighting and just got in line. I was amazed because I thought that the experience that I had at the barn that day was unique.
Unfortunately we lived in town the second time and I couldn't use a firearm. If you know what a Hawaiian sling is then you can picture what I
tried to do to the second line of cats. I only skewered 2 out of 3 of the ones lined up for servicing. I made up for the miss the next year
and I detailed that under the topic "Your favorite kills". I was forced to protect my Corvette that day.

I don't do this stuff around people anymore. It is difficult to explain your self to the local LEO. And I won't do it to known pets.
When I am 20 miles from the nearest house and I can't see collar or tag at 20x, then they become
unneeded predators. I really wish people would
stop buying cats and if they do, then keep them in the house where they won't predate on wild birds and such. I think cat owners need to take
responsibility for their choice to own a predator.
