For the last several seasons I've been having my WhiteTail hides tanned and saving them for some reason. I'm thinking about having a jacket made out of them anybody ever do this, and if so who did you use? I'd be looking for somthing plain without fringe or anything like that.
Thanks

Will this be a fashionable jacket to wear in public or a grizzly adams type jacket?

I have never done this or used the above company. It seems they can do the fashionable types. Just scroll down on their homepage to "Custom Jackets."

I have an acquaintance who makes "metis" style jackets. He uses one moose or three deer hides per jacket. The intersting thing about the metis style is they are not sewn but instead laced with leather thongs. It really looks nice. Maybe a google for metis jackets will give you some ideas, although I haven't done a search so I don't know what's on the net. One thing if you get one made, never hang it up as the weight will stretch it. Just throw it in the corner and it will last for years.

I am getting a leather winter coat made through a tailer. This is were I got a wool dress coat made in the past.He showed me a bunch of leather samples and I choose one, then he took my measurements and sends the work out because this requires special leather machinery. He said that he doesn't think the sheep leather will "hold up" for the coat, and he would have to go with cowhide.I guess the coat will be too heavy with its long length, and fur lineing.I don't know if this is of any help.

I too have a jacket made by Uber as does my wife. We went there and were measured to make sure that we were going to get something that fit like it should. They do good work and I am very happy with what I got from them, although when everything is said and done (you pay to have the hides tanned and then pay to have the jacket made) it ain't cheap!!!!

I've used Uber as well and they're a fine company and I recommend them highly.

There is a wrinkle here however and here it is!

I saved hides and had them tanned every year for a long time and then took them to Uber to have a special garment made. The hides no longer matched in color so I wind up exchanging my hides for new ones so that they can make my garment.

No complaint with Uber now...that's not my point!! I just saved those hides for nothing as the clothes I got weren't my hides anymore!!!

As previously stated, this isn't a cheap way to get a leather jacket. Mine was over $300 back twenty years ago.

I have had several things made at USA Foxx & Furs in Duluth, MN. One reason is that it is 30 minutes down the road. But they are very good and when I moved off I still had them make things and just mail it to me.

I am moving back next month and if I can get traps under the ice in time I will have them make more things this year as well.
