Impressive to say least. First all the Brno's and Mauser 98's. Then this fantastic collection

Truely something special! Well done Alf. It reminds me of a couple ranches in the Eastern Cape we hunted.

Efficient use of the wall spaces. Like the skull mounts that you have all over. Judging from your wall of fame, you have been hunting for a long time.

Really, really nice. I like the informality. Especially the bar area. I fully understand why you hate to see change from the old ways. It's happening everywhere as populations and living standards increase, not always for the better.

Alf,

I hunted that area in '77 and '80 with John Coleman. He was recently arrived from Rhodesia. We hunted on a fellow's place that had a sign in Afrikaans that stated that he ..'took no sh$$ from anyone !' I suspect that you probably knew the chap. He was in his mid 60s' in '77 and had recently bought the place .. Lots of color. His name was Mr. Duplessis. I was there in late July of 2002 and it surely has changed. I had lunch with Linda and Cecil Fair .. Very interesting folks.. John's sister. Their son in law George used to be a part owner in that safari outfit that opened up Mozambique .. A friend and contemporary of Harry Manners..

Mr. Duplessis used to work all day on his cat making dugouts to hold the water and then at night he would hide in the bush with his vehicle waiting for poachers on that road you mentioned. Once that I knew of he shot a vehicle up and the guy took him to court saying that the old gentleman had tried to off him .. Ha! Ha! I doubt if anyone doubted that at all ... Another time he put a game fence around his place (sometime between my first visit and my second) and one day saw buffalo on the adjoining area. He got his workers to lower the fence, hired a chopper which swooped over and chased them into his property and then put the fence back up !!! He had a great loud booming voice and was always laughing and usually giving someone hell !!! Once his son showed up and wanted to shoot a kudu for meat. Since I was there paying $250 for one .. and his son wasn't going to give him a damn rand .. he sent him to another farm of his close to a military site .. which apparently had little or no game at all .. There were two old guys living down the road and this was their home during the winter .. they told me that I could shoot whatever .. kudu, impala or such free .. Just give them the meat. A lion however they would love for me to shoot and give them the $2,000 U.S. I was all for that, of course. They had pretty well shot out all of the game but I did kill one impala .. And late one night I shot a hyena nearby. We went back to camp, had a drink by the fire and went to bed in one of the rondavels .. A short while later the two old guys showed up .. madder than hell. They had heard the rifle fire and knew that we had whacked a lion and were stiffing them on the trophy fee ... They marched into Mr. Duplessis's bed room .. surely startling the hell out of him and his wife !!! Rather than shooting the intruders he sent them to our rondavel to find out what was true .. I suspect that most of those folks are gone now .. Is Lolly Sussens still around ? I met his son at SCI about 5 or 6 years ago. At that time his trophy fee for a lion was $15,000 U.S. Lots of fond fond memories ...

Alf,

That collection is superb! With regards to the skull mounts,
do the taxidermists treat/coat the horns with anything or are they left just as when the animal it the deck?

Regards

Pete

Nicely done! So different from here in the states with sheetrock walls instead of the brick like you have.

What's the story with the lion drinking out of the pool in the top right photo in the hall of fame?
